15-Minute Arabic Paperback – December 23, 2013

I actually found that I used the free app that came with my book more often than the book!!!I loved referring to the book, however, due to the lovely pics and text.I even got two more DK language books so I can use the apps when waiting in line, when starting up the morning, and when travelling. Nice!!!

The item is in very good condition, just like new. It is really worth the money purchasing the item. However I noticed the arabic scripts do not have 'shakl' (fathah, dhommah, kasrah) in the booklet that comes along with the CDs. It would be easier to read arabic scripts with those shakl.

The product came in excellent order and on time. No problem!

And with a learning app that’s very easy to download from The App Store. And this is coming from someone who modern technology missed. It’s far more convenient than tapes or CD’s!Am currently enjoying learning from “DK 15 Minute Arabic”. It’s quite insightful learning in the Egyptian dialect, & the colorful pictures & cultural notes are helpful. Note, it you don’t know or need a review of the Arabic alphabet, another source may be helpful as at least a basic knowledge of the right to left reading is presumed.

I have studied Arabic in the past and really like this Egyptian Arabic book with 2 CDs. Although, it does not show the tanween - the diacritical marks that indicate the short vowels, the transliteration basically shows it. You hear from native speakers. I really like that I can listen to this at work when i am driving around town. The book is broken into a 12-week format.1- Introductions, 2 - Eating and Drinking, 3 - Making Arrangements, 4 - Travel, 5 - Getting Around, 6 - Accommodation, 7- Shopping, 8 - Work and Study, 9 - Health, 10 - At Home, 11 - Services, 12 - Leisure and Socializing. There are pictures with the Arabic words, exercises,useful phrases, conversational tips, and Latin transliteration even for those who do not know the Arabic script. The book also shows you how to write the Arabic script and how to connect letters, if one is not familiar, and a useful signs section. There is a menu guide and a brief English-Arabic dictionary, although really, English to Arabic transliteration. The book is better than what I thought it would be.

This book and the accompanying app are not worth the time or money. Not only are there typos but they never checked to see if their fonts would print in arabic. There's areas where they meant to show you the arabic way of writing certain letters but instead you get greek letters, question mark, or that TM trademark unicode. These are keyboard codes that were not tested when publishing the book. The audio in the app is set up in a way that is not user friendly. The app is fresh and clean and smooth running but not with the mind of a language student using it.

No words in this book contain some of the most important diacritical marks essential to reading (especially pronouncing) Arabic words. There are three that I am mainly talking about - one that indicates a short "a" after a letter, one for a short "i," and one for a short "u." It's really a shame since this would otherwise be a very useful tool for learning the language. Would not recommend.

It wasn't clear until I received and started learning from it that this was Egyptian Arabic when I was looking for classical Arabic.

Entsprechend kann man sich mit dem Kurs sehr gut auf einen Urlaub in Ägypten vorbereiten, oder den Einstieg ins ägyptische arabisch wagen.Die Wörter sind sowohl mit lateinischen als auch mit arabischen Buchstaben zu finden. Wer die arabischen Schriftzeichen nicht beherrscht kann sich hier somit trotzdem Wörter für den Sprachgebrauch beibringen. Für das Lernen der Schriftzeichen sollte man ein anderes Buch heranziehen.Von Essen und Trinken bis zum Shoppen sind alle Themen vertreten. Man wird im Urlaub seinem Gegenüber ein Lächeln ins Gesicht zaubern, wenn man ein paar Wörter kennt.Früher kam der Kurs mit zwei CDs. Heute erhält man Zugang zu einer App. So kann man auch unterwegs lernen.Man darf von dem Kurs keine Wunder erwarten, aber um im Urlaub ein wenig besser klar zu kommen, sollte es reichen und der Einstieg in die Sprache macht Spaß.

As a language teacher I purchased the present book and CD in order to support my Arabic language lessons for English speakers.The book is divided in different topics, very basic vocabulary but it is colloquial Egyptian not Modern Standard Arabic.If you are planning to visit Egypt this is the book you must purchased.
