Works as described- cheaper than buying brand new
We've had this refurbished hot spot for a month now and it works just fine. Sprint's network kind of sucks, but this device works as it should. Easy to use. Easy to get set up. Half the price of buying it in the Sprint store brand new.

that have poor service from sprint
I know of 5, all brand new but obtained from another vendor, that have poor service from sprint. I've tested 2 blocks from tower & get 4+ bars, 30Mbps speed. Go 4 blocks and it drops to 1-2 bars max, 6-8 Mbps. Anything farther gets only 1 bar, 1Mbps. Half mile away gets constant change between 0-1 bar, 1Mbps max ( when working at all). This is smack inside a geographic area mapped by Sprint as premium service- the very best! I carefully test the link between pc or phone to the R850 and no problems there at all. This represents VERY POOR SUPPORT FROM SPRINT!!!! Don't trust this product at all, unless you can be demonstrated a solid proof of performance. Sprint could easily support this product and service properly. It's perplexing that they don't.

Must pay monthly fee to use
They may work fine, but to activate them you have to pay $20 per month. I bought these for a charity who could not afford the monthly payment.

Sprint, worse network ever
The r850 works great. Its the Sprint network that sucks. Two cans and a string work better than their 4g network. I got better download speeds 30 years ago using dial-up than what Sprint can do.

This one is locked to Sprint - my mistake
But the ones we use are unlocked, and they are our favorites. Our other hotspot (Novatel Mifi) is faster & more sensitive....but it contains some very annoying login screens and power save features. In contrast, these Franklins are the perfect tools because they are simple. Plenty of good options inside the menus - but none of the glitchiness we've experienced with others. If I could buy one for each major cell carrier - I would. And one big plus? You can plug these into power (with or without a battery). And they'll never turn themselves off. This is huge.

They are really, really.....terrible
I have been trying to supplement my existing 4G LTE with the modem and service from Ting. They use this modem (R850). I purchased a new one in August. It worked for a bit less than a month then would not maintain a cellular connection. They replaced that modem with a refurb. It would not work out of the box--it was stuck in airplane mode. They replaced that refurb with another refurb. It will not connect to the cellular network. That's three modems in a bit over a month. I have spent 25-30 hours troubleshooting these Franklin modems. Buy one at your peril. Caveat Emptor!
