Thriller with supporting documentation. How can humans be so brutal?
I like the details of history, details of daily lives of spies, and details of conflicted politicians. All of this takes space/pages in a book, and takes time to read. Insert a subtle commentary on world events and leaders, and out comes a fascinating story. I will read more books by Andrew Turpin.

A little flawed, but a solid beach read
I don't want to be too hard about this. I realize its genre fiction and it contains your standard tropes and cliches (the protagonist is ex-CIA for instance), but the problem I had, at least in the first quarter of the book, was the clumsy background exposition via dialogue. Maybe it's me, but it bugs me when main characters tell each other things they both know and have no real reason to bring it up. I get that this is the first book in a trilogy, but author could have been a little more nuanced in offering us the backstory. So with that nit picked, I will say that the author is definitely capable of solid yeoman work and as the story goes forward it gets smoother and turns out to be a decent little piece of historical spy fiction. So yes, I would still recommend it.

Still struggling to finish
Best description is "workmanlike" novel. Hammered together okay. Plot flows okay. But totally lost me when I hit the line about cell phones not being secure enough, so better go to Skype. Okay . . . . I read indie novels because they don't feel like they were built in a factory. Some are downright brilliant, others . . . . meh.

Thrilling Adventure!
This is a thrilling adventure across several continents as the main character finds himself trying to understand why the brother of an important politician is killed and why the family seems to have limitless resources. Definitely a fun ride!

Accurate and Engrossing
A surprisingly good story that ranges from WWII to the present day. Both early and later portions of the story take place in an area of Poland I am very familiar with, and the book does a good job providing a historically accurate description of the area and the part it played in the war. The plot driver is a treasure of Nazi gold hidden in tunnels during the last days of the war. Two brothers who escaped the concentration camp during the war use the gold to torment a evil Nazi in hiding in Argentina. The characters are very interesting, and interact in a variety of ways as Joe Johnson, a former CIA agent turned Nazi-hunter, tracks the aged war criminal despite efforts by two governments to protect the criminal. The Nazi's son. old friends, former lovers and enemies work with and against Joe Johnson as he tries to understand the issues and do the right thing. The writing is quite good and keeps the level of suspense high as threat after threat impacts Johnson and his team

A Great Read
I purchased this for a recent holiday read and wasn’t disappointed. I found myself immersed in the book from page one. The author does a great job of character development and the book stands alone even though it is part of series of books on the protagonist, Joe Johnson. There were some challenging themes that could have benefited from more depth and realism but overall the book was an entertaining read.

Intelligently Portrayed.
Excellent rendering of the events. Couldn't stop reading until it ended. Very cathartic. Rare author address such bygone issues these days.

Book, the last NS

Up there with the best thriller writers
Genuinely loved this book!I read this book whilst on holiday and in the same week I read a couple of James Patterson's novels, this is in the same class. A fast paced, page turning story which is evidently well researched, pulling the reader into the action. The characterisations of the 'hero' and the protagonists are so well made you become immersed in this world of deceit, subterfuge and crime. The words 'page turner' are all too often used but I personally found myself racing to the end to untangle the web of threads laid by the author and discover the final outcome. The research and detail make the fiction almost believable, you end up willing Joe to 'win' but on the way empathising with the twins for the terrors they endured. If you like a fast paced thriller, full of drama and crime solving then this will be right up your alley. It is hard to believe this is the first novel from a new author, it has all the facets of a seasoned professional.
