Hanzo the Razor Who's Got the Gold

Over the top samurai police story that criticized the Shogunate
Shintaro Katsu was famous for playing Zatoichi the blind swordsman but he also did a series of Hanzo the Razor movies based upon a manga. It was a completely over the top role with Hanzo being a policeman known for using sex to get confessions out of women. The irreverence of the story is shown at the start when Hanzo says he wants to have sex with a ghost seen down by the river. Of course it’s not a real ghost just a woman posing one to hide a crime of stealing gold pieces from the Shogunate. That leads to lots of mystery, drama and of course sword fights. The movie is very good but there is one major problem with the entire series. Hanzo always reveals corruption within the Shogunate system but never does anything about it. This was the problem with Japanese cinema in general. It supported the country’s culture and traditions which held the samurais in great reverence which meant you could criticize the system, but you couldn’t actually do antying about it.C

Hanzo the man with the big sword.
If you seen one of Honzo`s movies you got to watch them all. He has got a way with the ladies and knows how to handle a bad guy. He uses his big sword on both.

Carry On Samurai
Well, it's no Akira Kurosawa or even Lone Wolf and Cub, but it is a pretty good Eureka DVD set and booklet, surprisingly decent considering the synopsis and years (72, 73, 74) it was made.I'd say check a few trailers before buying, as it won't be for everyone. I went in blind, with a very rough idea of what to expect, personally I go for more traditional Samurai movies. The DVD case looks okay (see photos), but to remove a DVD is a little tricky. I have to really push to get a disk to out, this could lead to a damaged disk if you are clumsy. Could just be my set...The DVDs themselves are very basic, the sound and picture quality is good. You just need to ask yourself if this is a set you want to add to your collection? If you can watch it elsewhere, you may not want to cough up for this set. Personally I'm happy to have it sitting next to my other Samurai titles, it's certainly different!

Hanzo is a naughty man
This man has a keep fit regimen that has to be seen to believed. Also has an interrogation technique like no other detective in history. Over the top. Crude. Rude. Good fun.

Hanzo is a Handful
Hanzo(Shintaro Katsu)is a fiercely independent,anti-authoritarian Samurai officer who dispenses justice equally to poor or rich alike with a particularly persuasive interrogation technique for the ladies.Eureka have put together the three Hanzo films with excellent transfers and informative booklets at a bargain price. The first in the series - Sword of Justice(now there is a double meaning if ever I saw one)is the pick of the bunch with excellent direction from the celebrated Kenji Misumi - director of three of the epic Lone Wolf series amongst others, with an excellent story and performances. In fact all three films have excellent production values and even though they are catagorised as exploitation films(part of the pink revolution that took place in Japan from the late 50's until the late 70's,Confessions of a Window Cleaner they are not.The violence is fairly tepid by today's standards(too many modern reviewers play up the violence when it is not that gruesome- the aforementioned Lone Wolf is far more bloodthirsty)and the sex is alternately bawdy, lurid and parodies itself at every oppourtunity but some may be offended.Hanzo only ran to three films and you can see why - his "interrogation"technique can only be shown so many times before it loses it's impact but they are all very well done and the first Sword Of Justice is a very good film in anyone's language.Buy.
