Aeon Labs Aeotec Z-Wave Key Fob

UPDATE: 2-8-15With the help of someone from the Vera user community, the key fob now works on my Vera 3 running UI7 with Firmware 1.7.481. The procedure to get it to work is documented on the Vera Forums. Do a web search for "Aeon Gen5 Key Fob ZW088-A not communicating with Vera".I have raised my review to 3 stars. I would give higher marks for this cool device, however, Aeon Labs has never responded to my emails (or this review). Do not expect ANY support from this company.--------------Be aware that older reviews (pre-mid December 2014) for this key fob are not relevant to the current product being shipped. The product you will receive is a Z-Wave Gen5 model. It will not currently work on a Vera 3 (and certainly not a Vera Lite). I have been on the phone with Vera support multiple days and hours, and they cannot get the device to function (props to Vera Support, they try hard). I have also emailed (they have no phone number) Aeon Labs to give me instructions on how to properly include it into my system, however 3-4 weeks later, I have not received a response from them. I would say it is an expensive paperweight, however it is too light to even function well at that.

Sad to say, I had to return the product. I was actually looking to have it replaced because I really liked the idea.My problem was that the battery went dead just days after I received the device. My bigger problem was that once I returned the device I received correspondence from Aeon that they replaced the battery and it was holding a charge and that the problem was in my programming. (I followed verbatim the included instructions). So I requested a refund instead of replacement.I was not happy with the construction, poor documentation which may have made the battery drain quickly, and very poor customer service when I returned it asking for help.

On my vera lite UI 7 I believe I am only able to use 4 buttons and not 8 and I had hoped. Perhaps I will find out how to get it to do 8. I am not using as often as I had thought and so that might be why it doesn't show up as a working device on my system. The battery is also down 10% after about a month or so. Perhaps taking the unit away from the house is causing that. One word of caution..this unit is not able to be upgraded like the non Key fob. May not be an issue for some, but if you need an upgrade you will just need to buy a newer one..

Key fob integrated very well with my system, but it's poorly designed and made of very cheap plastic. The sliding front cover doesn't really operate correctly with a key ring and feels like it could break off at any time. The buttons are metallic, not soft plastic like you'd typically find on a car's key fob. I get the feeling that this thing will fall apart or simply stop working after a couple weeks.

The buttons are really hard to push. With the sliding cover there is no reason to make the buttons this hard to press. Works well with Smartthings.

Since this is a premium key fob, I would have expected better of it. First of all I had to add a piece of tape to keep the battery slot closed. The spring inside exerts so much pressure on the battery and case that you can't keep it closed.Secondly the position of the slot to stick on on the key chain interferes with the key chain when it's opened to click one of the buttons.

Best compact Z-wave Key Fob currently on the market. Works well with Mi Casa Verde (Vera 2, 3 & Lite) to control scenes or individual lights (Configuration is setup on your Vera unit and not the remote).The Good:- Compact- Cover that prevents erroneous presses of the buttons.- Sleek designThings that make it not so great:- Plastic backing makes for easy damage if dropped or ripping of clips that keep the battery backing on.- Key ring slit is small, thicker key rings will not allow you to slide the cover back.

Don't waste your time!I wish I read all the reviews more thoroughly before purchasing this Christmas Gift for someone. Instead now I am returning it and getting them something else. The instruction manual is unclear and confusing. I CAN NOT find one manual that will walk you through setting this up with Mi Casa Verde. I have tried for three hours setting this up to no avail.
