But while a portable system may ultimately be your best choice, there are reasons you may want to consider an in-ground or wall-mount system before you decide. In-Ground Systems In-ground systems are permanently cemented into the ground--either via a bolt mounting kit or directly into the ground--and are generally more rigid and take up less space than portables. In-ground systems often require that you hire a professional to complete the task, but when the cement dries you'll have a hoop that can take punishing dunks with ease. Many in-ground systems are height-adjustable, include removable post features that let you take the system down for off-season storage, and feature heavy-duty break-away rims. You'll also want to research the adjustable mechanisms on the systems, as there are several types to choose from. Some feature a counter-balance spring that lets you perform easy, one-hand adjustments while others may feature a sturdy, pneumatic system. Wall-Mount Systems Wall-mount systems can be mounted to the side of a house, a tall retaining wall, or a garage. Generally sturdier than portables, wall-mounts have the added advantage of optimizing your existing ground space for the court, since you won't take any space up with the base or pole. Not all systems include the necessary hardware, so make certain you add a mounting kit to your list. Portable Systems Portable systems require minimal installation and offer ultimate convenience. These systems generally feature a base that can be filled with sand or water to stabilize them and include wheels for portability. Although they are not as sturdy as in-ground or wall-mounted hoops, portables are simple to set up and can often be folded for convenient storage. Backboard Considerations Regardless of which system you choose, you'll want to brush up on Backboards 101. Most residential systems feature backboards made of acrylic, fiberglass, graphite, or various other composite materials. While clear acrylic gives the professional look and feel of glass, it is not as rigid as fiberglass or graphite. Some systems may offer steel or aluminum backboards, which are virtually vandal resistant, but don't offer the true rebounding action. The regulation size of an NBA backboard is 72 inches wide and 42 inches high. Most portable hoops are 42 or 44 inches wide and 36 inches tall. In-ground systems tend to be a bit larger, with 54-inch and 60-inch widths being the most popular. While rectangular shaped backboards provide more bank shot opportunities, they are generally more expensive than the streamlined fan-shaped board. For the price, good enough.
When I went to replace a cracked fiberglass backboard and a rusting rim, I never imagined that simple replacement units aren't available locally in a 2 million person metro area. Everyone wants to sell complete systems, but as I already have an in-ground pole, starting over would require jackhammering out concrete and disposing of the debris. I really wanted something less involved. This backboard mounted to my existing adjustable bracket with a minimum of fuss. Quality is about what you would expect for the price, perhaps a small bit better. Given that this board (if you have an existing mount) is about 1/2 to 1/3 the price of any other reasonable alternative, it is a good value. All in all good enough for a 5 year old and his younger brother. If the keep at it, I'll gladly spring for a better system at some point.

Loving it
No issues just a very good piece of outdoor equipment. I use it and my kids certainly love it! Installing was a little bit testy but after a couple hours we worked it out and had it installed just above my garage door.

Looks sharp
This hoop looks great on the front of our garage. It was a great inexpensive solution to create another activity for our kids outside. We were able to put it together and mount it in one afternoon. It has provided hours of great outdoor entertainment.

Just what I needed
I needed a basket that the two boys could practice regulation shooting and also allow it to be lowered so their four year old sister could begin to start shooting. A friend and myself attached it to the front of my garage in about 90 minutes (I'm handy and he's very handy). The trickiest part was figuring out how high to attach the mount to the wall to get a 10 foot rim at the highest rise. This information was not included in the directions. We just measured out the rise from the mount to the rim at the highest setting ourselves and then calculated the mounting height ourselves. This might cause some confusion for some customers. If it hadn't been for this glitch it the directions, I would have given it five stars.

Backboard lacks necessary rigidity
After installing this backboard using the Spalding mounting bracket, I found that the rim began to sag "out of level" such that the front of the rim was lower than the back. This, I found, is due to the fact that the entire weight of the rim is supported by the plastic backboard. I found it necessary to fabricate an additional support to the supplied bracket and connect that support to my pole (which is a 3" galvanized pipe). I cannot recommend this backboard for that reason.
