Happiness Is a Warm Blanket, Charlie Brown

Really 4.5 stars
What's not to love about the Peanuts Gang? This blu ray looks/sounds great, interesting special features and stays true to the strip. Keeping in tradition with the older specials the music is jazzy, the drawings are old-school and still uses children for voice actors. The only bad thing, is the pacing seems a bit slow. and at times it seems like they are trying to fill each second with a gag from the strips that they sometimes makes the storytelling a bit uneven. But, overall, a great collection of classic jokes and characters. It is sad Charles Shultz passed away, and he is definitely missed during this movie. While the story is taken directly from his classic strips, back in the day Schulz would come up with new material to fill in the gaps or to bridge the main story with the side-gags. One can not rate this along with the christmas special or any of the three main holiday classics, as those cartoons are so iconic and part of the american fabric, that nothing today could ever compare to them. Peanuts is a family tradition, always has been, and will probably not being a part of our culture. But, this is a great little show in its own right. And those who try to compare the innocence and charm of the original strip with cartoons of today are morons. Even Seth Mcfarland has a respect for Ol' Charlie Brown and the gang. Todays cartoons are too snarky and crude, and at times raunchy. Peanuts have always been funny, but not in an overly cynical way. The writing is clever and the jokes/charm are in every single panel. It's hard to read a Peanuts strip and not smile. This type of humor and writing is missing in today's world. Everyone is always trying to be too vulgar, always trying to get noticed with profanity or suggestive innuendo. It's great to see that the great American traditions are still as powerful today as they were in the 50s and 60s. And Charlie Brown and his friends are a testament to how much people love storytelling that is real, and clever. There are no fart jokes, no off-color politically incorrect jokes, no making fun of the handicapped, no racist or sexists jokes, just good ol' fashioned fun and clever word play. I love Peanuts, and wish they would redo all the old shows onto blu ray. I thought they'd do that with the sets that go in chronological order, but they haven't yet. While I do love the fact that this movie is made from classic strips and I look forward to more like this in the future. I can't help but hope the older stuff gets a decent blu ray treatment. This movie is very charming and sweet, and worth every penny. Anyone who likes great humor and old-school values will love this movie, even if you are a small child or a grown up you will love what this movie has to offer. It has a longer run time than the older cartoons. But it's not overdone, just paced a little slow in parts. The amount of material wasn't the issue though it was simply the pacing. But, overall it was done with love. And it shows.

In case you old Peanuts purists had doubts about a new Peanuts special...
I hardly know where to start with this one. When this came out,my first reaction was "another not so great new Peanuts special" like the ones they've put out since around 2000. You know how it is,you're raised on the old school classics, and the newer ones they've put out the past years or so,eh. Still cool to see the old strips put to movable "skits",but still, not the same as the ones we grew up withThen I read online how it was REALLY well done and totally made in the style of the old specials. I just got through watching it,and I'm telling you,it's seriously like if they found an old lost early 70's Peanuts special. The look & feel is just like the classic ones. They went above and beyond to make this as basically an homage to old school Peanuts. not just in the style, but in all the great references. As Snoopy's scanning the neighborhood looking for Linus and his blanket, there's Freida and her cat Faron. Then the 2 dancing twins from A Charlie Brown Xmas jumping rope. Then Shermy & Patty(not Peppermint) playing in the sandboxThere's a GREAT part where Linus asks Charlie Brown if he has any bad moments in his past that would require a security blanket (or something like that) and it shows in 2 color flashbacks so many great classic 'poor Chuck" moments including the animated version of the very first Peanuts strip ever [...] but in the 70's styleThere was not ONE SINGLE to reference to anything from present day. It was an incredible mix of the classic 70's Peanuts special style & super polished top notch animation. You could tell it was a top drawer newer production but you completely felt the old school vibe 100%. The part that really impressed me is that like all the other specials,it was basically a collection of old strips tied together in an animated special, but nearly every one was ones they haven't used in the other ones. I grew up with peanuts and I know every line that was ever uttered from day one until about the mid 80's,so it was great to get excited over hearing so many classic bits. And speaking of lines,it's amazing how they found kids that sound almost EXACTLY like the voices from the old specials. Not all were perfect, but that part was just great. I'm telling you,if you are an old school peanuts lover like me,you MUST get this dvd. I am so beyond impressed and filled with joy over this. BRAVO

A good film
I was surprised to see a very recent Peanuts release, something we don't hear about in the UK.This film is not as good as the earlier specials or series, but that is only becauses Charles was not here to write it himself. The writer and director have done a very good job at taking the comics and creating a really powerful and modern feature film. The animation is very good, although the look is so clean it does not really compare to the earlier ones, it looks maybe too clean. On the plus side the characters suddenly look very cute, and the film + the amazingly beautiful music (Maybe a reason to buy this) creates a real mood for you, a real tale for Linus.Charlie Browns story that runs through the background is based on the earlier comics, showing mainly failure and depression. This is kind of funny at times, I'd have liked to see him act a bit more human though, rather than 100% emo. Also i would have liked to have seen more fun with snoopy, all he is there for is to attack Linus and his blanket. There must have been room to fit scene where snoopy is doing his daily fun activities (Like earlier films)Worth buying as a collector and a film maker, it all works really well together and will be watched many times by me and my siblings.
