Wit and Wonder of Johannes Kepler
This little book is a gem. It will make a great gift for a few of my more educated friends -- especially those who share an interest in Latin texts. Kepler is knowledgeable and has far-ranging interests as evidenced by the depth of his mathematical and physical analysis of the six-cornered snowflake. Some of his insights predict discoveries that would not be made until many years later. The two introductory essays are fascinating, and the poem by John Frederick Nims is a nice addendum.

A gem of writing by a great scientist of the early modern era
This delightful small book - given in the original Latin with a facing page English translation - shows the inquiring mind of Kepler as he wonders aloud about the hexagonal symmetry of snowflakes. The little treatise was written, he says, as a New Year's gift for a friend at court. This beautifully-produced book would make a good present today for a scientifically- or historically-minded friend. As well as Kepler's essay, it contains several other delights by modern contributors: an interesting general introduction to Kepler, a commentary on his snowflake essay, some exquisite snowflake illustrations, a twelve-part poem with each part in the shape of a snowflake, and some useful and extensive notes.
