Great dash cam, but clunky registration process
This is the second 70mai dash cam I have purchased, I particularly like the compact shape. It can be positioned so that it can be hidden from the driver's view by the interior mirror. The one thing I do not like is the clunky and unnecessarily difficult registration process. Registration failed using Gmail, I had to resort to my business Oultlook email to complete the process. Other than that, a great unit. When you turn off the ignition it goes into surveillance mode, in case your parked car gets hit. You can also tell it to take a picture, or record a minute of video by voice command. If the registration process were more straightforward this would easily be a 5 star purchase.

70mai Pro Dash Cam - Nearly What All Dash Cam's Should Be...
This has been one of my more disappointing gadgets, and not for the reasons you might expect - that somehow cheaper, less-known or unknown Chinese brand electronics are innately inferior and the complete waste of time that so many gadget users prejudicially think they are, or indeed that reviewers often paint them as - unworthy even of an objective look. In actual fact, the flaws present in this camera are not at all unusual in 'the market' for dash cams. That's what makes this experience so disappointing - that 70mai (Xiaomi) have actually gotten so much right in so many ways, and that for me the real deal-breakers are trivially easy for a good product developer like Xiaomi to iron out. Seeing the simplicity of the really problematic flaws is a frustration that gives me hope for the future if there are newer iterations of this product, but sadly I'm going to have to pass and move on to something else. The product arrived in a quietly understated package which doesn't sell this dashcam short like many generic brown-box brands would - a matt black cardboard box stamped with the company logo and an outline drawing of the camera in a sort of rose gold foil - and doesn't overstate it with flash and oversell either. The manufacturer presents the product like its something only the savvy would buy - never to be picked up randomly off a shelf because of the advertising spin on the packaging, but rather - true to Xiaomi's branding theme - kind of like a lifestyle brand because, I guess, that's exactly what they are in China and in territories like Russia and Eastern Europe where these brands have become the everyman's Apple and Samsung. I was actually surprised to find that the camera came with a second similarly themed box, which held the GPS mounting adapter for the camera, giving the impression that this is an optional accessory, generously provided as part of the reasonably priced product package on Amazon.co.uk. The camera is a great size and just the kind of form I was looking for - based around the wedge shaped design but with the barrel lens common to some of the more premium manufacturers like Blackvue. The idea behind this form is that you can fit the camera up behind the rear view mirror, giving it a central field of view and especially if you have some of the sun-shield effect blocking the glass around the rear view mirror mounting, you can adhere the 70mai Pro to the windscreen in such a way that the main body is nearly invisible from outside the vehicle, making it less obvious to thieves or those who might attempt to cover up their actions caught on camera. It is pretty small and unobtrusive even with the GPS mounting and the power cable installed, and can be unclipped, with a little persuasive force, from the adhered GPS mount for removal from the car if necessary. Don't forget to disconnect your power cable first. The camera contains very few obvious markings - the brand logo - and then the anonymous function buttons, which feel solid and work well, depending on the on-screen designations and labels to guide you to their rightful use. The tiny screen is adequate for setting up camera angle and navigating the settings menus and lets face it, if you're going to sit staring at a video recording of where you're driving instead of though the windscreen, you're being stupid. To that end, right out of the box, this camera switches off the video display after a few seconds of driving. The camera records video in 1 min segments, and I'm surprised that this isn't a user-configurable setting because on average I think in any collision incident, you'd want the camera footage for at least 3-5 minutes since you're bound to be out of the car for at least that time. Now, it isn't that the camera stops rolling after 1 minute. It records perpetually while the power is on. It's just that it is such a pain in the backside to go hunting for the right sequence of 1 minute videos to make up the suitable amount of footage, and there seems to be something a bit more realistic about other brands defaulting to 3 minute videos. Maybe 70mai stuck with 1 minute because the wifi connection, over which you download footage and images to your phone via the 70mai app is so painfully slow. This also is something I'd like to see improved. There's a lot to like about the footage that this little guy captures. It seems genuinely high resolution and at times is beautifully crisp and lively. I didn't delve much into settings as I just needed to quickly find the right choice for my car and get it installed, so I don't know if there are a raft of colour or brightness settings. I didn't have a problem with light in the image, what is apparent, however, is that the 70mai Pro is skewed out of the box toward over-saturation in colour. A light blue clear sky in February sun became a brilliant blue in the 70mai sensor with light colour so warm as to give the impression of a Southern California July afternoon... And perhaps here's where the expectations of the user deviate somewhat from the engineering provided by these device manufacturers, because once upon a time we all accepted that in order to have the luxury of a sub-£200 dash camera we would have to accept that the optics would be functional at best, like a CCTV system. But in these latter days we're now used to very affordable, credible HD and even 4k video cameras and the kind of footage we see on YouTube videos. We expect clear, we expect crisp, we expect lifelike, we expect high definition and we expect the output of our dashcam to be almost cinematic. The 70mai Pro proves two things - first, that we expect perfection at low prices and second, that companies like Xiaomi are getting close to giving it to us. Remember - lighting, colour temperatures, resolution in many cases are firmware tweaks away... And that's why the 70mai Pro is so disappointing in the 'so close yet so far' stakes. Much of what is wrong here is, apparently, entirely down to the software. And that includes the clunky, clumsy 70mai app. And users should note that if you want to faff around downloading multiple versions of the app from multiple regions, you can get more recent firmware for this camera, but sadly for the UK I was stuck on the out-of-the-box firmware so I have no idea if the rumours that later versions bring significant improvements are true. The app isn't pleasant. It can, at least, identify the camera and with some shuffling round a dated interface provide access over a wifi connection to the stills and videos on the microSD memory card you install in the camera (not provided). It's a creaky app, and you don't expect much from it. It doesn't really sell you into a user experience with the camera in the same way that other brands try to - Anker's Roav being the noteworthy example. Indeed, even the line of data burned into the video captured by the camera, the time and date stamp etc, we see the curious paradox of a high quality 70mai logo accompanying outrageously antiquated 'pixellated style' computer type from straight out of Wargames in a nauseating orange colour. This needs some thought, some style and some UX. I was impressed in general with footage during daytime, and to a certain degree at mid-light. The higher resolution shines through here, and makes passing number plates readable with a little freeze frame reviewing. At night, however, things fall apart and we see the introduction not only of a lot of low light noise to the apparently Sony Starvis sensor, but also the camera begins to struggle with the glare off UK standard white 'front facing' number plates, which just glare back into the camera and make legible number plates much less common. It should be noted that unlike some of the more premium brands which introduce CPL filters, there's nothing to reduce glare here and maybe that might be a potential fix that makes the night vision on this camera more precise and usable. The cumulative effect of these unnecessary issues is enough to drive me away at this point, even though I've not even mentioned my favourite feature of all - the easy-to-use voice commands which allow you to verbally prompt the camera to 'take a photo' or 'record video' to demand if you see something unfolding in front of you which you want specially captured. It's a silly thing, but I think it gives you the confidence of knowing that you can capture the events on the road in a heartbeat without hunting buttons. I really wanted to love this camera, and it is so very nearly 'there.' If I could get the nitpicky pedantic voice out of my head which demands perfection then maybe I would settle here with this well made, well designed camera. But at this moment in time, with the deficiency in software and the shortage of firmware updates, I just can't invest in this as my main dash camera. Hopefully 70mai will come back with a newer product and a stronger offering, although if I get my next choice right, I simply won't be in the market to look at it. I do know someone who is seriously tempted by one of these in spite of my observations, however, and given that she isn't bothered about how 'pro' the footage is and just wants dash cam peace of mind, and is happy to not use the app and let someone else take any videos she ever needs straight off the microSD, I think I'd be happy to recommend this to her as a really nice, good value product that ticks most of the boxes and is easy to use. Your mileage may vary, as they say. But with Amazon Returns available if you really are unhappy, you could give this a try for a casual user wanting a premium product without paying a premium price.

Buona vita a tutti
