My new favorite!
I saw the previews for "A Discovery of Witches," and started researching ways to watch it. I'm used to shows showing up in the UK first and available as Region 2 DVDs there before they migrate across the pond. However, I bought the first book to see how much effort I wanted to put into obtaining the show. I fell in love with Matthew and Diana. So I bought this region 2 DVD. I already have two libraries though, since I spend some time in the UK and some in the US, so I just watch on my computer. Works perfectly. So I've read through the first two books in the series and I'm on the third. I just finished binging the UK series on DVD today, so I'm ready to watch it on AMC at a more leisurely pace. The story involves a book, discovered in the library at Oxford by a historian, Diana (who is also a witch), doing research. Diana is discovered by a vampire, Matthew, played by Matthew Goode, who I've crushed on for years. I like his face. Witches and vampires are forbidden by creature law (the Covenant) to be together. And so, of course, the two of them fall in love. Everyone is searching for the book that Diana called up - even though she promptly returned it to the stacks. But now they are searching for Diana too - and Matthew. There's a lot of intrigue and mystery, but a lot of philosophy and romance, as well. I love the world that Harkness built, and I intend to keep exploring it.

The Adaptation from Book to Screen WAS Seamless—Very Well Done!
My wife bought this using my account. She loved it. Her review: This was one of the best adaptations from fabulous book to screen I’ve seen. As good as Outlander and that is saying lots. The casting was amazing. It stuck to the books and that is why it was so good. Can’t wait to see the next two books on the small screen. The author did an amazing job of writing and of selecting an organization that followed her dialogue almost to the letter. The special effects were not overdone so Matthew while seeming different, didn’t appear otherworldly. A great addition to my library. Some complained that the DVD/Blu-ray formats would not play in the US and this was prominently displayed. I bought a multiregional player and now am ready for any future movies that come in any format. In this day and age, I wonder why all players aen’t Multi-regional.

Great Story
This can only be viewed in a non Region DVD player. If you don't have one then don't buy it. I however do and it worked perfectly in my player. I love how between each episode they play the preview from the last. Just as if you were watching it live. I can't wait for the second season to come out.

Lame Twilight rip-off
First, for those who can't get the disc to play in multi-region players--you have to turn the player off and then on using the Region B button, which is blue for my Sony player. I got the error message too but a simple troubleshoot worked for me.As for the series, I found the book to be an incredibly lame Twilight rip off and the DVD doesn't disappoint: it's equally lame with a MC even more annoying than Bella Swan. (So much for hoping they'd change it enough to make it palatable.)The "actress" who plays Diana is awful but even a stellar performer couldn't have saved this Mary Sue. The acting overall was pedantic and the premise was a total snooze. This book and series contains every trope known to literary works and then some.As with Edward and Bella, vampire Matthew is instantly addicted to Mary Sue Diana. This character lacks depth and a backbone just as this story lacks originality.Don't waste your time.

I had pictured the characters differently, but it's still the equivalent of a good read
The episodes don't follow the books exactly- there are a lot of details about the Congregation and such that might come from the third book- I don't recall because I haven't re-read it yet- but they definitely aren't in the first book. And some of the characters are not physically at all as they are in the book. But in any case, I enjoyed watching it and can't wait to get the second season. The only caveat is that you can't watch it even on a PAL DVD player- I thought that would take care of the problem, but it didn't. I still have an old desk top computer with a CD/DVD drive- I was able to change the region and watch it on my old computer. But if you don't have that option, don't order the DVD- you won't be able to watch it.

Loved the books!
Couldn't wait to get this in. Wasn't as great as the book, but rarely are movies due to our own individual imaginations. This series followed very closely. Can't wait to get the next season. It was with the wait.

I'm sure this is lovely, but...
Silly me for thinking the region warning about "this DVD..." somehow didn't apply because I was buying the blu-ray.Note to self: Blu-Ray discs can be region locked just like DVDs.Note to other US-buyers: PBS is selling the US-region compatible version of this. :)

Buona visione a tutti!

I wish the second DVD was available!
I liked all of it. Now I can re-read the books and put faces on the characters! Many thanks!

Einfach zauberhaft…
Unbedingt ansehen!
