My horse can’t chew through it ! It keeps going strong in -40F !!!!!

In 20 years I have only had to purchase four of the same type of floating water heaters.

I like that these work well but they typically only last 2-3 seasons.

I'm crazy and when I buy something I like I buy another right away as a backup / spare. I heat a 100 gallon horse tank during the winter. I have one going during the winter, and the other in the tank as a pre-installed backup (so if #1 fails and water freezes, then #2 is in the ice. This happened once during a power outage and the concept worked well). My only complaint after 8 years is some how this past summer the thing got plugged in. I think one of the models (I have a photography business here with 90 models roaming around) probably plugged it in thinking it was for the studio lights in the stables ... I didn't catch it and the water trough is empty during the summer. The horses have a spring fed lake to drink from. Anyway, both of then got plugged in and burned out. I note on the instructions not to use it when the temperature is above 50 degress. Why didn't they install a ON-OFF thermocoupler to automatically shut it off when the water temp hits 50 .. .. Oh well, I'm ordering 2 more right now, it was 14 degrees last night. Live from the foothills of central Tennessee.

The stock water tank I had used for years finally stopped working. I ordered a this stock tank heater anticipating use in the cold weather. The below zero weather hit and this brand new tank heater did nothing. I needed that water for my horses. I had to purchase another tank heater from the local farm store and it did the job. Very disappointed.

This unit worked great. It sometimes floated at an angle, and not perfectly level which bothered me, but I don't think it interfered which its functionality.However, this is a 1,250 watt 120 volt heater, which means it uses over 10 amps of power. If you have nothing else on the same circuit breaker you are probably fine, but if you have other devices or heaters connected to the same circuit breaker you could overload and flip that circuit breaker. Then every light, heater, electrical outlet, etc. connected to that circuit breaker stops working.Also, by design, water collects inside the plastic housing. So when you take it out of the water make sure you let it drain out first.

This thing absolutely worked and kept my water in liquid form during the freeze. It was awesome. It does corrode quickly. After the freeze, pull it out, drain and dry it and put it up. Lots of reviews say they can have a short life for this reason. I hope that with proper care it will last a few years. But honestly, if it only lasted 1 year, I get one every year to keep my water liquid.

Works well...I've used these before, they don't last forever but certainly work well for several years.

My goldfish overwinter in the pond. The heater keeps a hole in the ice allowing for gas exchange.The price was right - a lot cheaper than heaters made specifically for fish ponds.My only complaint (very minor one) is that it does not have light indicating when it is heating.I am happy with it.
