Sacred Leaves of Candomblé: African Magic, Medicine, and Religion in Brazil

Tradition, Folklore, and...Botany?
So this is a book about botany. There are several detailed pages about plants. Perhaps this is not something you naturally find fascinating - I know I didn't. Luckily, this book completely and pleasantly surprised me with the style and story structure one might expect from a novel. This is the type of read you can plow through in just a few days; it's fascinating, relatable, epic, and occasionally deeply emotional. The way in which geography, flora, and culture are interwoven within this work is so lush it feels a literary symphony. Despite a certain density some may find intimidating for a casual read, Sacred Leaves of Candomblé is a truly unique book that will likely leave you thirsty for more.

Good information
A lot of good information in here. The more I read about Candomble, the more I feel like South America has the premium information about our tradition... The stuff lost on the continent as well as the adaptations made in the diaspora.

Voeks offers a fresh perspective!
Peter Voeks has accomplished something that Anthropologists and Religious Studies scholars have failed to do for years-- he has given us a fresh perspective on Candomble. Not since the early work of Robert Farris Thompson and Pierre Verger have I been so intrigued by a new publication on Afro-Brazilian religion. Voeks' book is both thoughtful and sensitive, and has something to offer the experienced student of Afro-Braziliana.
