Restoring, Tuning & Using Classic Woodworking Tools: Updated and Updated Edition Paperback – October 17, 2014

I'm new to planes and have been reading everything I can find on woodworking forums, etc. It's fun but many questions go unanswered. This book answers them all. Bevel up or bevel down, and why? What plane do you use for what job? Are vintage planes always better than modern planes? Why or why not? What about those corrugated beds on some old planes? How do you tune it? What about keeping it sharp? And it's all written in a style that is very easy and enjoyable to read. Printed on thick, high quality paper with hard cover and nice binding. In fact, the only downside is it might be too nice to keep out in my grungy workshop.

I have read this book several times from a library and couldn't resist the chance to buy it when I came across the revised edition. While the information in it is certainly well worth the read a more appropriate title would have been 'How to Buy and Use Secondhand Woodworking Handtools". When I first started woodworking nearly 40 years ago Mike was one of my mentors and I loved everything he published but found this revised edition to be disappointing. Surly within the last quarter century Mike had more to include in his tool reference bible update than a section on using eBay, that he now uses sandpaper for sharpening and that he had gone from being a devout disciple of Roy Underhill to a hybrid woodworker. The copy I got appeared to have never been proof read before being published. I found the sections on tools which I was familiar with to be covered at the most basic level. So, I would recommend this only as a book for people looking to buy hand woodworking tools and get started with them as you will definitely have to look elsewhere for additional information on how to actually use them. This man single handedly brought back the process of hand making Windsor chairs and has accumulated a wealth of knowledge over a lifetime of woodworking. Mike could have done much better.

I am collecting some old planes to use in my shop. A friend recommended this book so I ordered it. It is a very informative book. I recommend it to those interested in restoring old woodworking hand tools.

Overall completely happy with the reference material. The author could have done without the 2.5 pages dedicated to understanding what EBay is, and added some more material about truing up plane faces (sides not just the soles), and maybe how to refinish a tool with Japanning. Still though glad I bought the book.

Nice book - the poor reviews are probably somewhat true but if you haven't done this before this is a very nice place to start. I had but still found it interesting. If another draft I would suggest removing how to find except for the concept and what to look out for when purchasing w/o being able to see the plane.

This was a gift. the recipient said he liked it.

Das Buch an sich ist absolut wundervoll, Thema ist erschöpfend behandelt und sehr interessant geschrieben...ABER: es wimmelt nur so von Druckfehlern. Text passt oft nicht zu den Bildern und Bildtexte stimmen nicht mit dem Bild überein. Das ändert nichts an dem Buch an sich, sollte aber nicht vorkommen. Fünf Sterne gibt es also für Buchinhalt, aber höchstens zwei Sterne für Druck.
