JJC MSA-10 Hot Shoe Flash Adapter for Sony NEX3 NEX-3C NEX5N (Black)

Admittedly I was very skeptical about the fit and function of this adapter for my 5N. I have been very pleasantly proven wrong. The adapter itself is a complete metal housing with the metal hot shoe bracket for attaching the flash or trigger. Once installed and screwed in, the adapter feels very stable. I can easily pick up the entire camera from the adapter only while attached. There is no give or play in the socket. In fact it feels like a snugger fit then the actual included popup flash. The adapter does protrude over the lens ring but does not sit on it. The foot print of the adapter while attached while noticeable isn't awkward. It's smaller than the popup and the coloring matches my black 5N so it looks like it belongs.The adapter is very sturdy. I was able to mount a YN-560II flash onto the hot shoe without any issues. It can easily support the weight of the nearly 2lb flash. Even when trying to force some movement while moving the flash around the whole setup feels very sturdy. I will probably attach a small piece of rubber to the protruding end of the adapter so it may actually "sit" on the lens ring much like the included popup flash has a rubber foot.There have been lots of complaints regarding the included screwdriver. It worked perfectly fine for me. It is very small and the blade isn't as wide as the screw you're using for but it works and I was able to tighten it sufficiently using it. I'm glad they included something so small because I really wouldn't want to pack a full size screwdriver in my bag anyways.I whole heartedly recommend this adapter and wish i actually purchased it sooner.Some tips for using an full power flash with the NEX line:Get used to using manual mode - since the camera wont actually recognize the flash it won't know how to meter for it (TTL). You'll undoubtedly will have to fire a couple of test shots to dial in your settings.Disable live view - I believe only the 2nd generation NEX line or newer has this setting in the menu. If you don't disable it then your screen will show complete darkness because that is what the camera thinks it's metering for. Once you disable it, you'll be able to take photos in the dark.Off camera flash - depending on your flash model it may be able to slave using the popup flash as a trigger. The NEX line utilizes a preflash, make sure your slave can compensate for that. On the YN-560II just set it to S2. This will let you get really creative with your lighting.If you feel like you've reached the limit with what you can do with the included popup flash buy this adapter. It will give new life to your NEX camera.

Does not work with sony nex-5t body. When a legacy flash inserted with adapter, the camera does not recognize flash. No flash adjustment available in menu. Confirmed factory flash worked prior to using adapter.

The adapter doesn't fit very well but once pressed (hard) in, it works perfect with the manual flash; fits much better than the A6000 camera. I now have a very good indoors portrait camera. Thanks to the flash adapter, the Nex F3 has another chance to shine.

I have a Sony Nex-5 and have attached the TT560 Speedlite flash. It will not fire. The camera acts as if there is no flash attached and disables the flash.

Does exactly what I need it to do. I have been able to successfully attach and fire a Yongnuo 560 IV on my NEX-5R. There isn't any TTL mode but I'm wanting to shoot manual flash anyways so no issues for me.I did notice that once this is attached, removing it will be very tricky if you use other accessories (I don't so I'm fine with this being permanently attached)

This item does not come with instructions. It comes with a little screw driver to install it, I guess. I have NO idea how to install it in my camera and, for sure, do not want to mess with the flash shoe's electronic contacts. So fine, I lost my money!

good for umbrella flashes

purchased this hotshoe less than a year ago. it works with my Yong Nuo RF-602RX wireless trigger, also work when I directly connect my Yong Nuo 560EX and Nissin Di466 m4/3 flashguns. It comes with a screwdriver which is a little too small for the screw of the adapter but its "free" and it works okay. it doesn't come with an instruction manual like what one of the users here mentioned but you just plug this one in, tighten the screw and you're all set. it's that simple.
