Recovering My Kid: Parenting Young Adults in Treatment and Beyond

Highly recommended
Dr. Lee provided sound and helpful advice that was straightforward and honest. I have been reading this book in conjunction with Tim Thayne's "Not By Chance" and BOTH books have given me concrete guidance on how to best help my daughter who was in and out of treatment facilities for four years (total of 7 admissions). Because of her high suicidality tendencies with PTSD and drug/substance abuse, "Recovering My Kid" has helped me become the confident parent I needed to be. I had wished she was admitted to Hazelden as it was my first choice, but due to insurance, she wasn't able to. This book is the closest thing to helping me and my daughter outside of Hazelden and I couldn't be more proud of how much my daughter and I have accomplished in two hours. Thank you, Dr. Lee for your nurturing advice and help in time of crisis. I am hoping that the crisis will decrease.

A reassuring read for parents of addicted children
When your child is ready for treatment to recover from addiction it's is my experience that parents and the whole family need to make changes -- basically, recover -- too. This book is realistic and encouraging. It breaks down stigma. It addresses feelings of blame and shame. It provides a guidepost for how parent's recovery goes hand in hand with your child's.

Top M.D. in the field wrote it - so buy it!
I read this book in February before attending a workshop led by Dr. Lee. It is a fantastic resource. The 3 section format, and use of short chapters with "bottom line" summaries for each, is a palatable way to dig in to this challenging issue. My young adult had completed an intensive outpatient program and was in the last 6 months of Hazelden's 18 month Connections program when I read it. Dr. Lee has deep respect for parents and it shows page after page in this important book.

An Absolutely First- Rate Book for Parents,
This book is a first-rate resource for parents who have a child in recovery from addiction either as a 'stand-alone' diagnosis and/or - as is frequenrly the case - with co-ocurring disorders. .Dr. Lee has provided a clear, accurate, very accessible "framework" to help parents understand what otherwise can seem like a jumble of information and suggestions for care with no discernable - or a too narrow - an intellectual or theoretical consistancy. It is deeply informed, humane and balanced. I return to it more than any other book on the subject, (aside from alanon literature) when I want a calm but realistic picture of the long-haul. I recommend this book without reservation.

Recovering My Kid
When your child is using you dont know what to do other than ask yourself almost hourly, "where in the world did I go wrong?" It gets to be a viscious cycle and eventually you feel torn down, it feels hopeless and you don't know what to do or how to survive because this addiction has hijacked your family and done a double whammy on the whole family. This book helped me to clarify, step back and see the forest through the trees. It gave me reassurance as well as ways to cope, what to do and what not to do. Of course I would recommend it to any parent, Grandparent, Brother, Sister, etc.

Recovering my kid
For any parent anticipating their child -teen - or older son/daughter back from the discomforts of treatment or halfway house, I want to encourage the thinking of Joseph Lee.The concepts and thought-processes broached are numerous and he has quite a fine way of speaking to the reader as if his family may himself be experiencing this sort of dillema one day.One could read it in a day and then over again. As a single parent, I have chosen to absorb it slowly, contemplating new ways of parenting and thinking. It is a great before bed reading for a therapist or parent-coaching their child.

Asked and answered
Asked and answered. Every time your mind says "Yeah...but... while reading this book, just keep reading. Dr. Lee covers so many components of adolescent recovery that the answer to your qwuestion is in there. Organized in a very logical way with wonderful explanations, this book is most readable. Never talking down to the reader and offering a look at recovery from enough different sides that the reader is sure to find new and insightful information.
