1/2". The device comes with a magnet to to fit into the hole. A 1/2" by 3" cow magnet work fine as well.

What is the maximum size magnet that will fit in the tube?

Ours came with a three (3") inch cow magnet. I bought extras in case one gets lost as they do. The device works great with students demonstrating magnetic fields in 3D. Hope this is useful. Richard
