I've done a lot of turning over the years. I loved this book. A lot of excellent information on an area of turning that I hadn't done before. Bowen covers design aspects too. I've made a few earrings and necklaces since getting the book. The instructions were clear and I can see that I'll get a lot of use out of it.

If you are looking to start a craft with wood, this is your starting point. If you can master the skills in this book the whole world of wood turning is open to you. This will show you how to make best use of those wood scraps to valuable to throw away. Lots of inspiration between the covers.

A good book with cleared pics and explanation

I found the book useful for someone new to turning wooden jewelry. While I thought the book was repetitious I did pick up basic concepts. I would have liked it if she had spent some time on tool use.

Book has a great information to help the novice and experienced wood artist make better jewelry

Ms. Bowen?s book assumes that you have some woodturning experience, and so does not go into detail on the basics of turning wood. She has included many high-quality, full-color photos of both finished pieces and works in progress.The first part of the book covers tools (both essential and optional), glues, chucking, and woods that are suitable for jewelry. The first section also includes a chapter on the concepts of design. This chapter covers the topics of form, function, proportion (including the golden rectangle), balance and delicacy. This will be a good help to those of us that are not natural born artists.The second part of the book has 5 chapters, covering earrings, brooches, bangles, rings, and necklaces. Each chapter starts with photos of finished items and includes many individual photos within the chapter. These photos will be excellent for helping the beginning jewelry maker get started. Each chapter also includes step-by-step instructions for making a couple of basic pieces.The third section covers staining/dying, inlaying wires, laminating and other decorative methods. In this section there is a good chapter covering the various jewelry findings that can be used with turned items. This section ends with a chapter on alternative materials such as bone, horns, nuts, plastics and metals that can also be turned on the wood lathe.The book has an appendix detailing the properties of some common woods that are good for jewelry making. There is a bibliography of 5 books with titles covering band saws, gilding, dyes, Art Nouveau Style, design, and wood identification.Overall this is an excellent book with outstanding photos that should be an inspiration to anyone that wants to make jewelry on a wood lathe.

Good and useful..already seen it.

Ce livre entièrement en anglais nécessite quelques connaissances en anglais technique par ce que les nombreuses photos ne seront pas suffisante s pour apprendre quelque chose.Une connaissance préalable du tournage est nécessaire.On ne peut reproduire en l'état les modèles proposés parce que le design est suranné mais ils donnent quantité d'idées pour créer soi-même des bijoux aux formes actuelles.De nombreuses techniques sont abordées et de nombreuses heures seront nécessaires avant d'avoir tout essayé !

Ok so so

Le livre reste en anglais donc difficile de tout comprendre, car mon anglais reste basique, et les images ne permettent pas toujours de comprendre le déroulement de la fabrication, en revanche il y a de bonnes images et ce livre mériterait d'être traduit en français car il présente des techniques intéressantes.
