This is a readable but partly fictionalised account of the imprisonment and torture of Christian pastor Richard Wurmbrand under the communist regime in Rumania. His faith not only saw him through appalling years of suffering but helped many of his fellow prisoners and guards too. The events narrated are factual but the dialogue is to some extent made up, The book does not cover Richard’s whole life and virtually nothing after he was released and gives no sources but if we can believe even half of what we are told this was an incredibly brave and inspirational man whose fate is a useful reminder that atheist regimes are not necessarily utopias! Apparently intended for 8-14 year olds it may be a little heavy and require too much background knowledge for the younger end of that range.
