Q: I thought having a built in preamp was so you could use it with a set of powered speakers without having to have a separate amp/system to plug into?

I have a pair of Sony tower speakers with built in amplifier connected to the denon deck and it works perfectly.Merry Christmas.

Yes of course it need externat speakers and external ampli

Q: Can it convert the analog to digital format?

Good Afternoon, This turntable does not have a USB connection and is unable to transfer from analogue to digital.
