Love this Book
I really liked how t this book gave the information about cartooning without being so crowded with pictures that you didn't know where to look first. I found it easier to read and was more amused by the drawings than most books. I won't need instructions to make my own cartooning with the information in this book. Glad I bought this book and got to see some good cartooning by an expert.

Jack Hamm is one of the best instructors ever...
Jack Hamm is one of the best art instructors there is, period. His books are accessible and easy to use and learn from. He created a series of books that help the budding animator, painter, sketcher, or comic artist. If you have some art skills, this is a great book to buy to learn more about caricature, styles and technique, running figure, scene setup, It has great shortcuts and tips for artists of ALL skill levels. If you haven't read his "First Lessons for Painting and Drawing", it is an indispensible book you may want to read before this one.For kids, the Jack Hamm books are the next logical step after the Ed Emberly Big Green Drawing Book and others in his series, and next the 2 main Mark Kistler books.

I was expecting more of a how to draw book ...
I was expecting more of a how to draw book, which this isn't. Showcases a lot of the authors work, but little about teaching me how to draw. I will use as reference but that's about it.

TIMELESS
The book is old but the lessons will never expire. What a gifted artist. This book was very helpful when I was planning on a special project.

DRAWING STYLE AND HUMOR DATED AND PROBABLY USELESS
While I value some of his other drawing books, this one is an after-the-fact compilation of old work that is hopelessly dated and is not likely to be of any use to any artist working today. It may have value for those who need to do a drawing in a long-abandoned style, but for most of us it is no loss that this book is out of print. Also, the laughs promised in the title never materialize. In short the book falls far short of the promise in its title.

Disappointing
Less of a how-to, more of a book of examples of the author's work, organised by category. Hodge-podge of ideas. Could maybe be used for reference/inspiration, but that's about it.

For Hamm fans
If you liked Jack Hamm's Cartooning the Head and Figure, (which got an average of 5 stars here on Amazon) you will like this book. Although not quite as big as Hamm's more famous book, it is done in exactly the same style, with TONS of examples on many different subjects. Although the style might seem somewhat dated today, it would not be that hard for a talented student to update the style in his own drawings for modern audiences. Like Hamm's other book, this is tons of fun to look through and sure to be an inspiration for many.
