Does this work on units that need an air switch?

No, it's instead of an air switch. All it does is remotely give 240v to a plug thats plugged into it, if your unit works when you plug it in, this will work for you, but when you plug it in, if your waste disposal doesn't start, this is not for you. Hope this helps

The photo is not of a European socket - it's a normal UK 3pin, plugs into your socket normally then your dishwasher plugs into it. The bulkiness is because it contains a wireless receiver, which turns the socket in when you operate the wall remote button . It's axsafety feature for dishwashers .

Is it set that waste disposal only stays on whilst button is being pressed and stops when button is released?

The air switch activates the motor , the motor will continue to run until the air switch is pressed again. There are a variety of machines some don’t have an air switch operation, check the specifications before buying.

Is this compatable with a wastemaid 158 1/2 horse power, waste disposal unit.

It should work ok providing you have a 3 pin plug on your disposal unit, however, it didn’t work for very long so I replaced it with a different system.
