Talking Fashion: From Nick Knight to Raf Simons in Their Own Words

What (fashion) interviews should be
I bought this book because I am a fan of Bernhard Willhelm and wanted it for that interview. I honestly expected it to be an interview I had already read somewhere else but just put into a book, but it was totally new and more.If you're a fan of someone and you read interviews with them, you pretty much know everything after a few interviews. Despite my saturation of Willhelm interviews throughout his career, and although a small part of the interview here had already been covered, I felt like Kedves showed me a new part of Willhelm I had never seen before. The sign of a good interview is if you learn something from it that you didn't know before, so well played, Mr. Kedves. And the photos used for the Willhelm interview were really great, including some from the most recent collection when the book was published, and Kedves didn't just use a bunch of years-old photos that we've all seen a dozen times already.I was so impressed with the Willhelm interview that I immediately read a few more with subjects I was interested in like Willi Ninja, Rick Owens, Walter van Beirendonck, Valerie Steele, and Miguel Adrover. I learned things I hadn't known about each subject previously (for example, I consider myself somewhat of an expert on Alexander McQueen, but I never knew that Adrover and McQueen were close friends), and Kedves really has a knack for asking interesting questions about things you would want to ask about and for going in new directions with each subject. Most of the time fashion (and talking fashion) can be trivial and superficial, and a lot of fashion media is just promotion disguised as press; but each interview in the book is refreshing and prods its subjects into interesting territory. And occasionally it veers into some catty comments, so if you're looking for some "ooo girl" moments this book won't disappoint.I read all the interviews in the book - so even the ones with people I wasn't that familiar with - and I discovered a lot. I found that I really liked the design outlook of the duo behind Bless, for example. And the subjects are a good variety of people involved in the fashion industry, not just designers. For the price of four issues of US Vogue full of fluff pieces you can buy this book which is chock full of meaty fashion interviews.
