August Smart Lock, 3rd Gen Technology - Silver, Compatible with Alexa (Renewed)

I received the August Smart lock and was so excited to try this product out! Upon unboxing the lock, I am sad to say the whole top portion of the lock was covered in a flaky white substance. Upon further inspection I discovered that batteries had been left in this product causing erosion to ruin the inside and out. I called Amazon Customer service and was told they can’t help me because this is a “Warehouse” item. The service agent sent me an email with a link to contact the warehouse. When you click “help me” on the link it states “Please contact Amazon Customer Service for help with this item.” Needless to say I will be very careful buying more expensive items from Amazon in the future, especially electronics (seriously who leaves old batteries in an electronic, someone who clearly didn’t grow up with a portable CD player that’s who). After extensive cleaning (RIP to my nails) I was able to remove most of the erosion (and paint and part of the serial number and a portion of the outer shell) to put batteries in the lock. So far so good in the working sense. Then comes time to set up my sensor, surprise surprise not all the pieces for install are there. The lock is super easy to set up (even if you have to make your own assembly pieces out of common household goods).

It has limitations.Problems:I purchased a “refurbished” on from amazon. It was used and returned in pretty rough condition. It was also not reset to original condition. So after installing I could not use the lock because it was still registered to a different owner. I called August who attempted to reach the old owner. After 72 hours they were suppose to reach back out to me. They never did. So I returned the “refurbished” unit.I purchased a new unit that was defective and killed the batteries every 3 days. So that was a expensive problem. I contacted August and they were better this time to send a replacement.Like a Previous photo review showed if you have a window around the lock there may not be enough room to install the lock.I’ve been using my new third lock now and it has been working well so far. But it’s been some what of a struggle to this point.

I have two of these. They are well worth the money but you should know a few things. First, in order to access remotely (without being near the lock), you will need to buy the August Connect bridge. That allows you to connect your lock to your WiFi which let's you lock and unlock it from anywhere. Without it, you need to be in Bluetooth range. The second thing you need to know is that you can only connect one lock to a connect bridge. This means if you have 4 locks you want to access remotely, you need 4 connects. The last thing I would caution you about has to do with your current lock. Make sure you are able to lock and unlock your deadbolt EASILY with no resistance. This means without pushing the door forward, etc. Any resistance may cause your lock to not work.Ok. So far I have two of these and I plan to get another. I have one on my front door with the August Connect and one on my garage door without the August Connect. I never have any problems connecting to my front door. Sometimes the garage door takes a few trys to connect but I don't think it's ever taken me more than 30-40 seconds. I use the auto unlock feature on the garage door since that's where we park. It works 19/20 times. Overall these are great locks.

I bought this not realizing it was refurbished but for the price it didn't matter and I have bought many other certified refurbished items with no problems. One caveat, if during the installation the app CAN'T FIND THE LOCK it is probably still registered to the previous owner. You can either go through Amazon Tech Support or August. Amazon will only be able to connect you to August as they have to release the serial number to allow it to be associated with an app. This is a security feature as the app is your key and once paired no one else can pair to your lock.I have read many reviews where people have complained about the lock not working with bluetooth and I specifically did not initially by the WiFi bridge to make sure the product worked before spending more money on it. I have a Galaxy S9+ and literally as I am walking up my basement steps to my front door I can hear it unlock so I am assume the problem has more to do with the phone than the lock. Also the lock is a little noisy but it's no noiser the someone inserting a key and opening up the door.The door sensor worked very well. It was able to tell if the door was closed, ajar or open. This is handy if you use the auto lock feature like I do. Overall I have been very satisfied with the unit and would buy it again.

I am so dissapointed with the lousy support. My problems started with inaccurate status of the door lock. See my attached pics. The status reads OPEN/LOCKED. Door is actualky closed n locked. I have reached oyt to suport 6 times within 30 days and tried their recommended fixes but its still not working property. I really wanted this to work but I give up. Refund please!

Easy to install very simple straightforward instructions for connecting the app had to purchase a Kinect to get it to connect to Wi-Fi though that was a little bit of an inconvenience or do you have to have the camera doorbell whatever situation it is I'm not sure exactly to connect to Wi-Fi one of the other the connect later that camera Bell to do once I got the connect as far as connecting to Wi-Fi and works well

The August lock is a great idea and a pretty good product. My biggest complaint is getting the bridge connected to use the Alexa voice-controlled app. Used as an auto-lock for Airbnb it has the convenience of inviting each new user to access the lock with a smartphone.

Easy to install and you keep the same key, so that makes it great for rental properties where you don’t have permission to rekey or change the locks.
