'Don Egolf' is somewhat more compact in growth habit (9' tall by 9.5' wide in 15 years) than seedling Chinese Redbuds. When in flower it really is a sight to behold, with its bright rosy-mauve flowers so tightly packed on the stems as to obscure the bark. The floral display is all the more impressive because you'll find flowers solid from the branches all the way to the ground. The plant in full flower actually looks a lot like a pinata done in shrub-form. We must not fail to mention that this variety is also completely sterile, so there is no need to worry about reseeding or untidy pods hanging-on all winter. Also makes a spectacular bonsai!

I paid 10 bucks for a rooted cutting.
Usually, I've had good luck buying from Hirts in the off-season. This time I got burned. Attached is a photo of the cutting a month (March) after I bought it. (mid Feb). Way too delicate to go outside, so it spent the rest of the winter and spring in my kitchen. It still hasn't grown much more from the photo, but I finally got tired of fussing over it and planted it out in shade last week. I've gotten really nice shrubs from Hirts, and I deliberately buy in the off-season to get the plants that had a season to grow. This baby with one mature leaf looks like it was pulled out of the newborn intensive care unit. The problem with Hirts is that you never know what you are buying.

first plant I received with leaves!!!
We just bought a new house and we went tree/plant crazy, since I don't have too much time to search for plants I order on line, the little tree came with soil and leaves perfectly packed for it not to spread around. I have it about 2 weeks now and it have bigger leaves now, I'm not really great with plants but it seems like is doing great by its own...

Perfectly shipped
These 2 little trees arrived safely and Healthy. I must stress- they are little. Yes, a 4" pot is small & the plant is no more than 10" tall but these little beauties are going to be the gems of my landscaping. They are planted in a place of honor in my yard ....it's just going to take a while before anyone notices them.

Lovely plant Fortunately it survived shipment. Arrived looking a little dried out but perked up with rehydration.
Perhaps expedited shipping would have been better as it is a long road from Ohio to California.I will probably have to wait til next spring to see real flowers but this seedling is forming two tiny flower buds one month after repotting. It arrived with leaves but no buds.

Pretty Tree
This tree arrived before spring 2009. It was well packed and arrived in great shape. When I received it, it was just starting to show signs of budding. The buds were wonderful and it went on to leaf out and look lovely. I am now waiting to see how it will survive it's first winter in my care.

Tiny plant, suitable for bonsai lovers
I've got a tiny plant, 2 inches off the ground, three leaves, perfect for a bonsai. I was honestly expecting something much bigger.
