You need this!
Love these annotated versions! So informative and helpful! I’m actually one who has read all Austen’s books numerous times and know a lot about the history, but I learned a lot and understood much better. Kudos to the editor and publisher for enriching my life with these editions. I have also been sending as gifts to all my Janite friends. Even the former English majors are thrilled. Just the thing for anyone who loves to increase their knowledge all their lifelong.

Very comprehensive annotations
For these versions, each spread has the actual novel on the left side, and the corresponding annotations on the right side, guided by superscripts. These annotations are very comprehensive and provide historical context on not only the story, but also the author (including references to her other works and letters) which allows me to read this book with more understanding. It is interesting to learn about the culture and customs of the time and how they contribute to the characterizations in the story.

Incredible annotated version, gives so much background knowledge
Absolutely amazing version of the book. It’s divided so the left has the story and the right has the annotations. Every page is filled with really good information. So well done and so helpful. Will definitely be purchasing other annotated Austen novels by David M. Shapard.

Discover or rediscover this classic novel
I’ve read this brilliant nivel before, but these annotations revealed details, nuances, and context that I’d not realized before. Each two-page spread has Austen on the left page, and the annotations on the right page. Some pages include historical illustrations of fashion, landscapes, etc. Brilliant!

Thorough annotations
I thought I was pretty familiar with the historical period, but I learned new things from the annotations. I also appreciated the annotations on Jane Austin herself. I particularly enjoyed the reports by her family members on what Jane said happened to some of the characters later after the book was over.I wouldn't mind if the text were printed a bit bigger next time. I understand the paperback is already quite hefty, but I was getting eyestrain after reading for a while.

Another great addition by this author!
I'm a huge Janeite and to find the annotated works has been like Christmas in a bottle. I ordered a copy of every single title I could find. The left hand pages of the book contain the original story and the right hand pages contain the annotated notes. As with the other titles in this series, the notes are exceptionally well researched and help the reader grasp the intricate details that Austen included.

One MAJOR flaw.
As a collector of JA editions, I bought all of these annotated JA novels. I am very pleased except for one MAJOR flaw. The spine title is oriented differently on Emma from all the others. This really stands out on the shelf. Why would any publisher do this? I am thinking about making a cover for this one.

They are full of amazing information that explains word usage at the time Austen ...
These annotated Jane Austen novels are fabulous! They are full of amazing information that explains word usage at the time Austen wrote as well as the social, political, and cultural background that every reader knew and understood 200 years ago. Enjoy the novel for the story and wonderful writing the first time through, then read it again using these annotations and discover how much you missed with out them and enjoying and appreciating Jane Austen even more!

A Delight from Start to Finish
"Emma Woodhouse, handsome, clever and rich, with a comfortable home and happy disposition" is the twenty-one-year-old heroine of Jane Austen's wonderful novel: 'Emma' set in the village of Highbury. Having decided to remain unmarried herself, Emma delights in match-making amongst her friends and neighbours and with one success already under her belt, with the marriage of her governess to an eligible gentleman neighbour, Emma sets out to help things along in the matrimonial field with her new friend, Harriet, and the vicar, Mr Elton - against the advice of her good friend, Mr Knightley. Mr Elton, however, has other ideas and has his mind set on quite a different partner and hence the road to romance does not quite go the way Emma had planned. And then a very suitable and seemingly eligible young man for Emma arrives in Highbury and is keen to make himself amenable to our heroine, but this young man is hiding a secret - a secret which, when finally revealed, shocks Emma and everyone around her....From an author who really needs no introduction, this witty, beautifully written and deftly composed story is a delight from start to finish. Emma is a marvellous (if sometimes slightly irritating) heroine, and most of the other characters are wonderful too, including Emma's hypochondriac father and the very garrulous Miss Bates. Wonderfully amusing this is a novel to read and reread - however, the main purpose of this review is to mention this particular edition which has been annotated by David Shapard and which has the notes printed on the facing page of each page of text, along with pictures and diagrams of people and objects from the early 19th century. Of course if you are familiar with language and traditions from this period, you will not need this particular edition, but I bought a set of these annotated Jane Austen novels for a young teenaged relative of mine who has not been brought up in England and needed more explanation than is available in most editions. She is finding this edition particularly helpful and it has helped her to enjoy the story much more than she otherwise would have done.5 Stars.

Pubblicati 5 romanzi in Kindle e cartaceo.
