It says Special Recycled Board. It is stronger than an average puzzle I would say. The back is blue. I like it.

No there is no frame just the puzzle pieces.

I suppose diversity is not a concern at all? I guess I could color some of the faces. Would marker stay on the pieces or would it wipe right off?

I would think marker would rub right off, and also cover eyes, etc. I know you're not asking how people feel about the lack of diversity, but honestly, the people are so small, I doubt the kids would even notice. I started buying 100+ piece puzzles probably about 10 years ago, for my childcare kids, and most of them don't even have people in them. I'm guessing you have plenty of diversity in your books, toys etc.
