Q: Can this be switched on remotely via a smart socket or does it only start up by operating remote

It does not start automatically when power is aplied. You have to press the button on the front to get it to start or use the remote.

Q: Rather than hang on the wall could this be placed on a shelf? Response would be appreciated. Thanks

as long as you have air flow and allow for the front flap to open I dont see why not.

Q: It makes a loud beep each time the remote control changes a setting. Can this be switched off?

Hiya, all I can say is. mine makes the same noise, a bit annoying but have not found a way around it as yet after 2 yrs of use, Apologies I cannot be more positive, Regards Ron

You can have mine if I can find it. I have not used it since new. It will be still in it,s wrapping.
