Wooden tool effective, doesn't retain smooth texture after use
This tool invented in Scotland in the 15th century works very well to prevent lumping in oatmeal and other grains. It is good for stiring soups and stews and yeast starter. The Lathing of the tool has shaped a disc-like end where most spurtles are totally rounded on the business end. They probably did this to conserve wood, but it leaves crevices which may become hard to clean. The wood does not stay smooth and does not remind me of Beachwood. Wood that becomes rough is not as easy to keep clean.

Our Scottish Heritage
My Dad liked to tell a joke about an Englishman who wanting to insult a Scotsman for eating oats said, "In England we feed oats to our horses". The Scotsman replied, "That is why the English have the best horses... and Scots have the best men." In honor of our Scottish Heritage, and to encourage my sisters to eat their morning oats, I got us each a Spurtle for Christmas this year. These are beautiful wood pieces and have already been getting good use. I included the traditional instruction to stir only with your right hand clockwise lest you invoke the devil and that in a pinch, your Spurtle could be used as a magic wand!

Very good little tool
I've heard the term, "spurtle" before on my Bob's Red Mill steel cut oats, but it never occurred to me to look it up and see the connection between the food and the item. Dunno why more people don't use this thing- it stirs porridge WAY better than a spoon. Used it with polenta so far, but I know it'll see a ton of use in the future.Kinda funny how basically a stick works so well.

Just great all around.
Well I am an old time Southern girl but really love steel cut oats. I soak them overnight in filtered water & add old fashioned rolled oats when I cook them the next morning. This darling but ancient tool is so much fun to use & makes a major difference in the quality of my porridge. Smooth, creamy & lump free. Fun to use & I really appreciate the workmanship.

Picture Three, Test one!!
The picture said Three Spurtles so I ordered the Three Spurtles. Surprised was I when the one came... only then did I read the print and not the picture. But the one spurtle will become a present for a favored niece!!
