Mandolin Classics in Tablature (Mel Bay Presents)

Since I can't "sight-read" musical notation well, this book's tablature has allowed me to begin learning some beautiful Baroque songs. I just started playing mandolin a few years ago, and this kind of music really lets me explore the fretboard as well as the instrument's full capabilities. I feel my mind wake up a little more each time I progress in playing--literally I have to scratch my head as I learn the more complex phrases.This book is worth buying even if you have a love for one song only: Bach's "Prelude". Besides this classic favorite, there is an excellent selection of pieces for mandolin players on all levels.

I'm a bit disappointed by the book. The tablature is different, using 5 lines instead of 4 placing the numbers between lines which is very confusing for a beginner. Although you might say classic music is not to be played by beginners, tablature is usually a beginners tool for those not fluent in written music. Even though I am from Europe with appreciation for Bach, I also don't know most of the music pieces in this booklet. I was hoping for something I could remember for recognition and easier play. I will try to work through the booklet but feel there is not much of emotion to do so.

Lovely collection of classical pieces!

It's a good book, i really like bach's prelude to cello, it's pretty much the only one i play over and over and over. Not crazy about the other songs in the book, i've tried them a couple of times but did'nt get hooked. Good quality book. Tablature is kind of weird on 5 chords but you get used to it.

Easy to use, nice to have these pieces with tablature.
