I expect that you would have other items in the bag in addition to the lens, and this presents a different question as to the size of the other items you plan to put in the bag with the 300 mm lens. The size of these other items, of course, will affect the space available for the lens.

No, but you might consider it water-resistant. It at least kept my camera dry in a pounding Scottish rainstorm. It's pretty thick.
