Product description (2CD) 1999 album containing the huge hit "Clubbed To Death" with BONUS DISC of instrumental versions. Review (Cheeky/Warner Bros.) Best known for the classic "Clubbed to Death," two versions of which feature here, London-based Australian Rob Dougan’s debut LP mines a similar groove without ever re-hitting such anthemic heights. Still, while the lack of further masterpieces is a predictable disappointment, Furious Angels remains a diverting listen, showcasing Dougan’s unique take on what we often wrongly call dance music. More in the mode of compatriot Baz Luhrmann than close associates Faithless, Dougan’s LP pitches itself firmly toward the movie theater rather than the dance floor. Hence expensive-sounding strings abound on most of the 14 hugely intense, densely produced cuts here, Hitchcock-style. Surprisingly, the majority also feature Dougan’s own, very distinctive, vocals — a sort of pained, Bob Dylan-like, bluesy rasp. Not the most pleasant noise in the world, it‘s either supreme confidence or slight egomania that lets it dominate so heavily. The also-available instrumental version is thus a less interesting, but much easier listen. Choose your weapon. Simon Hawkins -- From URB Magazine

Bought it for one song, loved all of them
I was incredibly pleased with this purchase. I had discovered Rob Dougan on my Pandora station, and unfortunately could not find the instrumental track of the song "Nothing At All" on iTunes. I buy everything on iTunes, and OffLiberty the rest where possible. But this music spoke to me on a profound level, and I was ready to drop money on dozens of tracks I hadn't initially wanted just for that one song.Boy, did this become a great find. The instrumental tracks are all excellent and complex, but the ones including the vocals are also wonderful. I often find myself listening to this album(s?) when I'm in the right mood. It's dark and powerful, and I love it.

Fantastic album
LOVE this album!! Came across him first on Pandora, but the more I listened the more I fell in love with his raspy voice. Love the mix of instrumental, electronic, dance, and that salty, sorrowful, angry yet wonderfully manly voice. It's a wonderful mix and compliment to the music. Also lots of great instrumental tracks. Totally recommend for euro, dance, techno, soul, 80s, 90s, synth pop, and lovers of music like Depeche Mode or Glitch Mob.

Brilliant Debut Album
Rob Dougan's Furious Angels is a remarkable album. First, if you are going to get it, make sure to minimally aim to buy the double CD (which includes a second instrumental-only CD). If you can, try to spring the extra few dollars for the enhanced double CD, which includes a gorgeous, artsy accompanying booklet with lyrics and photos. BTW, the second CD also includes the remarkable videos of Clubbed to Death and Furious Angels.Dougan's music is a unique blend of classical, electronic, and pop. The instrumental CD gives a much better feel for the actual quality of the music and I find myself listening to the instrumental CD more than the first CD. Dougan has an interesting, somewhat gravelly voice. It works well on Furious Angels, but can get a little irritating on other tracks.I have to admit that I there is a touch of the teen-angst spirit in these tracks which made me laugh, or at least roll my eyes a bit. Furious Angels begins with the lines, "Like a sentence of death/I've got no options left", plus you have songs with the following titles: Left me for Dead, Clubbed to Death, Speed me Towards Death, etc. OK, I admit it. With the high drama of the music and song titles like that, it could be considered a tad pretentious. But for all the quibbling, this is my favorite current listening album. Furious Angels and Clubbed to Death are the strongest tracks. If you liked them, then get this album. You will not be disappointed.Note to Rob Dougan: We are looking forward to your follow-up album(s)!!

an album I never get tired of
I love this album. I bought it on impulse after getting the music from the Movie Matrix.. then I looked up the artists from that album, and ordered a couple of albums from those artists. This was one. I had never heard of Rob Dougan before the movie Matrix. This has since become one of my favorite albums. one that I haven't gotten tired of yet (and I've had it for a couple of years). I love the combination of the orchestra, and his voice (which is stylistic, not "beautiful".. but it fits well). There are 2 albums, one with him singing, and one with just the instrumentals. Both are good. There is one theme running through the voice album.. basically the theme is "love scorned". The songs describe the ups and downs, the anger/longing/hurt in this situation. After I heard this the first time, I thought, "Whoa, Dude, whatever she did to you, it must have been bad.. but, you really need to get over this!" However, if Rob is drawing from his real life, perhaps the experience was meant to be so he could create this album. There is only one song that I skip over.. and that is the drinking song. and there are a couple of pauses/blank spots that I would rather not be there. but.. that is about the only negative thing I can say about the 2 albums. It is also a great album to listen to when walking/running. great beat, but with enough variances to keep it interesting.I keep looking for a new album from Rob Dougan.. but none so far. Perhaps he made a better choice in the love department, this time around. ;)bottom line, I definitely recommend this album.

One of the best albums you've never heard
This album is brilliant! Absolutely brilliant. I first was exposed to his music by seeing the Matrix, but that is only the tip of the iceberg. There isn't a bad track on this album. Even better is this deluxe version with the instrumental versions of most of the tracks. You need this album. The only negative comment I have is that once you hear this, you'll want to hear the next album of Rob's which has still yet to be produced. Other than that, you will enjoy every minute of Furious Angels.

Play these CDs so often my friends bought it too
I absolutely love this album. The instrumental disc allows you to conjure up beautiful images while the vocal disc tells a story of angst from the artist. I think it is a genius concept and I play them both quite frequently.*I had no idea his music was in the matrix

Most excellent 2 CD set... best is the 2ond CD with all orchestral pieces. Along the lines of Phillip Glass and Adams.1ST CD is most like early Leonard Cohen.

Beautiful! A refined, soul fulfilling project.
If you want to feel like you’re inside of a computer simulation, fighting a multitude of formally attired men, I'd advise listening to this album! (I hope you got the reference)On a serious note, this album is a beautiful work of art on which establishes itself very well, it is a bold statement and can bring forth a wide spectrum of emotions. Ranging from: hopeful yet bitter sweet tracks like One and the Same, melancholic tracks like There’s Only Me and self reflecting but thrillingly intense tracks like Speed Me Towards Death / I’m Not Driving Anymore. This album is self aware and does nothing but showcase the emotional, psychological and existentialistic journey an individual faces, each track emitting so through an intelligent execution of the portrayed subject matter. This album has extremely good reply value; not only is it easy and enjoyable to listen all of the way through, but there are instantaneously recognisable tracks you can throw on anytime I.E. Furious Angels and Clubbed To Death. If I where to reach and nitpick, I’d say Drinking Song is my least favourite track. And Here I’m going to get really specific - Before, I didn’t appreciate Instrumental and One and the Same being both included on the album (One and the Same adding lyrics and more / altered instruments) as they both use the same orchestral piece. (Definitely different to an extent) I felt like this was a cop out intending to act as a filler track for extra run time. However, I grew to love such false dilemma. I realised Instrumental was a beautiful stand alone piece (on which deservedly, needs to be on the album) regardless of One and the Same being an included and fantastic track / amazing outro to the album.P.S. I cannot let my appreciation for Nothing At All to be left out; this is a beautiful track. One of the most delicate, precise and amazing intrumentals I’ve ever heard. In contrast, Rob’s dark lyrics are juxtaposed perfectly. (In my opinion, this track has the strongest vocal performance.)8.5 - 9 / 10

An overlooked genius. Masterful modern orchestral on one CD, and accompanying dark lyrics on the other, that hit heart and soul.
Rob Dougan... you'll know his work - the instrumental version of "I'm not driving anymore" is used as the theme tune from NCIS Special Victims here in the UK.I searched high and low for years to find it.And then I discovered, he doesn't just do instrumental versions of his tunes (that are kindof like modern orchestral songs) but the lyrics of the second CD are scary. I have some serious issues with depression, and autism, and frustration, and.....And not only did I love "Not Driving" as a tune, his lyrics to it summed up perfectly the "stop the world, I want to get off" feeling I had at the time. It still is, the most perfect summary of the desperate feeling of not being able to cope with life, that I know of. Some may interpret it as a "I want to commit suicide", and there is that potential darkness in many of his tunes. But if you analyse logically, it does not add up. For instance. "Get me out of harm's way. Can't you see I'm paralysed?" Why would a suicidal, ask to be gotton out of harms's way? I'm just trying to warn you, that his lyrics are deep and serious, and not for the faint of heart. But the instrumental tracks alone, are in a class all of their own. Some people may find his lyrics a little dark and disturbing. But there is a brilliance to his composition, that has no equal, in my 45 years of scouring for instrumental music (and sometimes the more emotional lyric-ed songs.) And I mean, that BOTH his insturmental, and lyrics, are top class. For me, that likes barely 1% of songs that have verbal accompaniment, it's a big compliment. Although, I would also say, he doesn't always hit the mark. I love about 40% of his work, like and sometimes enjoy another40%, and the other 20% is "meh" skippable. But again, even those I really do like, are lucky if they hit a 10% success rating with me.There are plenty of Youtube videos. Have a look at his original one for "Furious Angels" (filmed in Cape Town, SA, btw) and you'll get a good idea, of what this Aussie genius is about. You could rip the tracks. I bought this dual CD, because... he is that good. And worth every penny.

Amazing
Outstanding.... so glad I managed to get a copy of this classic album. As far as I'm concerned Rob Dougan is a musical genius. i really will keep this brief , as all I can say is it is fantastic- in particular I like track five Clubbed to Death and 8. Instrumental, it is hard to explain why this album is so great- a mixture of orchestral and electronica I guess. My only slight negative would be I'm glad he does not sing on all the tracks- so as I'm not sure how I feel about it- but the album is varied and overall unique.

This double CD is a must...
I know, I know, you probably haven't heard of him, but I'm almost certain you'll have heard his music (Top Gear, Guinness advert, Matrix film music - the list goes on). Orchestral whilst at the same time dancey, angry vocals combining with melancholy at times to produce an emotional sound that really gathers you up and sweeps you along for the ride; it's easy to lose yourself in the emotion and sheer hughness (is that a real word - I don't care, it just sounds right!) of this fantastic, marvellous, wonderful, sensational soundscape. On the bonus CD you get instrumental versions of some of the songs on CD1 - in some instances these work even better than the original vocal version. This is a must have in anyone's music collection - go on, you won't be disappointed.

A Masterpiece
A classic, underrated album that everyone should have in their collection. Why has Rob Dougan not received much more widespread acclaim? Ignore this music at your peril

Better than expected, and I expected it to be good!
First, the few problems I have with this album: the singing, frankly, doesn't always work...for me. I prefer the instrumental versions, but maybe that's just me. Secondly, I was a bit disappointed that Chateau (from Matrix Reloaded) isn't in there. Okay, I have the Reloaded soundtrack, but that isn't the point! Those are the problems I have with the album, the reason I don't give it 5 out of 5. Everything else is fantastic. It weaves classical, orchestral music with electronic, dance, hell, a little bit of everything. Almost feels like there is a track for every mood, but my personal favourite is Will You Follow Me. You'll probably recognise it from at least one advert...

Excellent music
As a fan of all tracks by Rob Dougan in both Matrix films I took a chance on his album. I was not disappointed. I was surprised to learn that he is responsible for the theme tune to "Law and Order" ("I'm not driving any more"). This made more sense of why the Wachowski Brothers used that music in one of their trailers for Reloaded. The vocals on CD1 are of a unique style often reminiscant of Chris Rea. However, it is the mix of beats and strings that make this music superb. If you liked "Clubbed To Death" from The Matrix or "Furious Angels" (or indeed "Chateau") from Reloaded then you will enjoy the other tracks.

Blown Away
Bloody amazing. I bought this on the strength of clubbed to death and clips from you tube. Whoever sitting with headphones on both CDs are amazingly good. Didn't think I would enjoy instrumental, wrong again.Vocals may not be everyone's cup of tea, they in my opinion add a gravitas modern pop would do well to listen to.Only disappointment is RD appears to have headed to the hills... If anyone knows him find out if he's going back to a studio at any point.

Atmospheric and moody
Bonus having disc 2 providing the same again as instrumental, so you can really appreciate the different mix of instruments etc.No doubt you would have heard most of Rob's music in films and adverts due to the ability Rob has to drum up emotions from within you quickly, getting your pulse racing or lowering pending the ballad.

Just one of those composers / song writers that has written tunes / themes that are used over and over. Furious Angels instrumental fantastic to listen to wearing a high quality pair of headphones, with the sound cranked up about half way. Top quality.
