How does the switching between 4 and 8 way work? Is it possible to do after the joystick is already mounted?

Instead of 8 buttons blue and the blue joystick could I order 8 yellow buttons and a yellow joystick

, I have this set for my pi. Emulation station crashes every time the controls are connected. Why is this? The encoders are not same as pics

How are the buttons installed? The tabs that hold the micro switch are wider than the ring that needs to unscrew?
