I felt such pride in the standard of education, tradition and faith that are instilled in these young people, along with the Pride of serving. our country. and what that really means. As the wife. of a retired. Navy commander. I have great respect. for those who wear the uniform. of any branch of service. I also live very close. to the Citadel in Charleston SC and see first-hand how the Cadets serve the local area. This is the type of movie that Hollywood should still be making! Tyrone power and Maureen O'Hara. and the supporting cast of this movie did an outstanding job. I would gladly give 10 stars for the rating on this movie. Thank you, desertcart, for having it in your selection.

It’s about a real person who added to the wonder of West Point
I saw this flick when it first came to television and loved it. As soon as the disc started playing the movie the story came rushing back. I’ll be watching it many times more. The story is about a real immigrant who dedicated his life to caring for the cadets of West Point. He is buried at the Point. I don’t know how accurate the flick is but it’s a good story.

One For The Whole Family
This movie was Tyrone Power at his very best, the way he develops his character of Marty Maher is amazing. We see his character age as the story progresses. Speaking of the story, it is a wonderful look at life inside West Point, both of the cadets and those that were the instructors, not academic, but of other activities, sports etc. The story begins around the turn of the 19th century into the 20th. If you look not too very close. (Minor spoiler alert), you will see a depiction of the graduation of the class of 1915, the class the stars fell on. It was called this because this class produced more General Officers than any other class in the history of the Corps of cadets, including 2 five star generals, Eisenhower and Bradley. When you see this scene you will see a depiction of the graduation of these 2 wonderful men. The Long Gray Line story is told through the eyes of our Irish immigrant character, Martin Maher. Marty comes to live in the United States, becoming an instructor at West Point. He becomes a favorite of the Corps of cadets, meets an Irish woman who also works at West Point as a food service worker. They marry and the rest of his family comes to live with them. There is sadness when tragedy strikes his family, but his friends in the cadet Corps pull him through. He becomes so loved by the Corps that he works long past his retirement age following WWII. It is an interesting depiction of how the Corps of cadets plan for classes that will graduate right into WWII. There is a wonderful scene how Marty defends the Academy when it falls under attack by some moron politician, in fact the put down he puts on this politician would make Donald Trump cringe. All in all, The Long Gray Line is a wonderful movie. I was introduced to it as a young boy in grammar school while watching with my parents in the 1960's, and the movie has stuck in my mind all these years. One of the true delights is witnessing the depth of Tyrone Power's talent, while keeping in mind his personal tragedy of passing away at the young age of 44. The Long Gray Line is one of those movies that provides sheer entertainment, and will stick with you after viewing, just one of those marvelous classics that Hollywood is unable to repeat today.

A Patriotic Film still Applicable for Today-- Tyrone Power at his best
Tyrone Powers best film. The film was delightfully sincere and well acted, and very informative. No purple prose propaganda, but a look at how the young men were formed into the leaders that they became. It is an excellent film about tradition, and just enough comic relief provided by Tyrone Power with his excellent performance of a man who despite his ignorance, makes a valued place for himself in a community of people who are significantly more educated than he. A very positive film that will still bring tears at times. Fort a film of this vintage to be just as appropriate for today as it was then, this gets it a five star compliment.

A wonderful true story!
The story of Marty Maher a misfit who was welcomed in to West Point by a kindly athletic instructor who made him his assistant! Marty became a well beloved guide and helper to many of the recruiters! He spent most of his life a West Point , including finding and marrying the love of his life! Often funny, sometimes sad ! A classic drama! Worth every penny! Arrived quickly and in very good condition!
