Dynasty Warriors. Xtreme Japanese Genius
Through it's incresingly popularity and ridiculous amounts of violence, Dynasty warriors is destined to be one of the best selling series of all time. Even though xtreme Legends is Dynasty Warriors 4 with extras, it gives you an even longer lifespan to an already HUUUGGE game. From a selection of 41 battle-hardened warriors, 50 levels and two brand new modes, you can't be lost for choice. There's even some new characters and even a huge new end level. The musou mode is now based on an episode basis and can span up to six or even seven episodes for everyone to enjoy.Dynasty Warriors 4 XL is a must-buy for fans of the action-strategy genre. A huge lifespan, great graphics and a superior staryline for a game that can last for months.

A must buy
Where to begin? This is what I asked myself when I first met the menu screen. There is just so much to do... xtreme mode, legend mode, challenge mode; and then you have the option of grabbing a friend and playing versus mode or co-op legend mode. Not to mention remixing with DW4 to play musou and free mode. However, having not played DW4 myself, I can't really touch on these. And then there's the small matter of 5 difficulty levels to challenge yourself with and the umpteen weapons and items to unlock. You could play the game for months and not finish it.Well I know me spouting a load of mode-names isn't particularly helpful, so I'll try to explain. Legend mode consists of 42 different short scenarios, each specific to each character (that means 42 characters peeps!). They are very varied in terms of objectives, some involving stealth, some involving escape, some involving escort dutie. However, the one thing I like is that the developers have kept true to the core of the series; the heart of the gameplay being the good 'ol hack-and-slash i've grown to love, with a hint of strategy. The attacks are vastly improved from DW3 and DW2, but I suspect they're the same in DW4. Graphics are good, with detailed characters and excellent animation, not to mention the HUGE levels. Slowdown is very rare, but the game still suffers from that annoying fog, which is even more noticeable in two player.Anyway, once you 'finish' legend mode, you can replay each with a any of the 42 characters you like, as well as your own officers that you can create, AS WELL AS your own bodyguard units you create as well (how many as wells can I get in a sentence?). But my favourite mode has got to be xtreme. in this mode, you pick a character (can be your own), choose a mission out of 3 randomly generated choices, buy stuff from a shop and hack your way through china. You can create your own kingdom and defend it with your life, recruit unit and officers to accompany you, do missions for other officers and even betray your allies. It's great. Also, you don't choose a difficulty... it starts easy and gets progressively harder with little health to find along the way. You can't save mid-game as such, but you can between game so the game manages to keep you on your toes (don't have room here to go into detail). If you get killed, that's it though. No loading previous data.Anyhow, I'd love to go into more detail, but space and time is short and all I can do is recommend it to anyone. I think it's brilliant as a stand-alone game, and will probably be loads better mixed with DW4, along with the improved AI. Old DW fans will love it, and I'm sure newcomers could be converted...O, I also love the encyclopedia. Call me sad, but including the history of the three kingdoms and hundreds of officers involved is a great idea.

Dynasty Warriors 4.5
The first thing to note about Dynasty Warriors 4 Xtreme Legends is that it is both stand-alone game, and an expansion pack for Dynasty Warriors 4. It has new two modes of play over DW4, Xtreme Mode and Legend Mode. However DW (2 onwards anyway) as a third-person hack and slasher (for me reminds of the days of 16 bit side-scrolling beat'em-ups) is repetitive by it's very nature and DW4XL is no different. On first play if you have a DW4 save game on the same memory card, the character and weapon development and collected items are absorbed into the DW4XL save. If you have the DW4 disc Free Mode and Musou Mode can become available if you choose Load Original from the main menu and insert the DW4 disc. There are two additional difficulty modes - Beginner (why?, 'Easy' is easy enough) and Expert and an additional Challenge Mode - Arena, which is series of duels. There are six additional items also. Unfortunately the officer and bodyguards have not been touched which is a shame really.Xtreme mode, the first unique play mode is a series of randomly generated skirmishes that are 20 minutes at most in length. Character and weapon development and item acquisition is independent of other modes (Free, Musou, Legend). There is precious little health on levels, so has to be bought from a shop between levels as can stat power-ups, troops and the allegience of up to three officers. If you happen to die on a level everything you built up and acquired with this character will be lost. If you save (and exit) and start as somebody else (or start over) everything you have collected will be saved. The second unique mode, Legend Mode, is where each character, all 42 of them, have a individual scenario supposedly based on an event specific to that character in (Romance of the) Three Kingdoms (the book the DW series is based on). Furthermore the scenarios often have limitations such as no bodyguards or no items. However the scenarios are usually mangled version of these events or entirely made up. Some of these levels do offer some variety though, for example in Diao Chan's scenario you have creep around Luo Yang castle without being discovered by patrols in order to kill Dong Zhuo. Also of note in DW4XL is when you use the DW4 Free and Musou Modes, the AI is alot better for any of the AI controlled characters including your bodyguards, this obviously also applies to Legend and Xtreme Modes. Also the duelling has been improved, power-up items seem to now apply during duels. It is a lot harder to die duels. If you have DW4 and are not tired of the inherently repetitive gameplay then I can recommend it. It has breathed new life into DW4 for me. However I am not sure if I can recommend it to somebody who is new to series (or at least without DW4).
