Mutants and maggots playing and feeding in the city dump
Hino's 'Black Cat' I thought might be a nice alternative to the 'Goosebump' books for kids, but 'Hell Baby' is definitely not for the young ones, specifically because of a certain decapitation. In Japan, twins are born, one perfect, one hideous. The horrified father takes the mutant baby from the hospital and throws it away. A strange rain of firebolts merge together and strike the tiny corpse, bringing it back to life ... er, sort of. Hell baby lives and crawls and grows, but has the nasty habit of dropping maggots everywhere. When she is seven years old, Hell Baby leaves the dump, searching for something that seems to call to her through the piles of garbage and city streets. The city does not welcome her presence though, because Hell Baby is hungry.Hell Baby is illustrated in a nicely gross way, but the book, in my opinion, held too many "dead cells" for a graphic novel; filler cells that showed nearly the same thing in the previous cell or nothing at all. That part was disappointing. The storyline was pretty typical too, though the gross meter is above average. My recommendation would be to find a used copy and not pay full price, or see if your local library can get a hold of it for you. There are better graphic novels out there. 'Hell Baby' was fun for the grossness, but disappointing in cell design and plot.

All the Hino you want
In this standalone tale from Hideshi Hino, you see an abandoned twin left to die in a garbage dump, unwanted by her family and ostracized from all civilization. Hell Baby is without speech for the entire book, though this is one of the better devices this story uses. Throughout the shriek!'s you come to feel for this character of circumstance -- this HELL BABY -- and Hino's sympathetic side appears between a mad picture of grotesque imagery and sharp allegory. Some may be turned off from this story for its blood and gore, but underneath this Graveyard of Horror is a quirky and fine-tuned story of redemption and even forgiveness. Recommended.

Hell Baby
Overall, I enjoyed Hell Baby. I finished it in one sitting. I thought it was an interesting manga but it could have been better. I felt that it was really short and that there could have been more to it. I did feel bad for Hell Baby and grew somewhat attached to her. Would I recommend it? Sure. If you're in the mood for a short horror manga.

Awesome!
One of Hino's most well known works besides Panorama of Hell, Hell Baby is a tragic story about a deformed twin that is rejected at birth. This story is very sad, but also very dark. I would recommend it to those that love horror manga

Hellishly Wonderful
It was delivered quickly, and in perfect condition, and I've already read and re-read it at least four times. I read his "Panorama of Hell" comic online and was hooked. A wonderful author. I love his gorey scenes >:]

Devoured in one sitting
This manga is worth owning. It is both sick and touching at the same time. The author is able to make us feel sympathy for a cannibal. I wish that more horror manga like this one was being published.

Grotesque, yet sad...
When I purchased this manga, I didn't know what to expect. I'm a fan of Hino's other work, but I will admit that at times the sheer gruesomeness will be a bit overpowering. This manga was no exception. What I liked was that even though the average reader will find themselves repulsed by the acts of Hell Baby, you can't help but feel a bit sorry for what it's had to go through. In this manga you have two babies born as twins, however one is beautiful & perfect... and the other is born a hideous freak. Hoping that the baby will die from exposure, the parents chuck the newborn & take off to live with the prettier child. As time passes, the mutant baby eventually starts searching to find something that it can't quite remember.Would I recommend this to a friend? Maybe. They'd have to be into horror manga & have a strong stomach. If they have both of those qualities, I'd recommend it easily.
