Flawed Design, Does not work better than the older L1400 Model, NOT RECOMMENDED!
I want to start this off by saying that I own the Previous version, the L1400 (Green colored one) and have used it for many years without issue. The only thing I have had to replace on it was the rubber piece on the bottom inbetween the front brushes. I used it to clean my decks and driveway which would be filled with hundreds of pounds of leaves in the Fall. Besides the occasional clog, it never really failed me.So, when it came time to purchase another little rubber piece, I figured why not instead put that money towards a brand new L1405 SpinSweep Pro! So after reading through all the positive, glowing reviews I decided that it was most definitely going to work much better than the old L1400 and I eagerly jumped on board, ordering it from Amazon with my wonderful Prime benefits!BOX: Amazon did not put it in another box and just put a label on the actual retail packing. I was concerned at first that the actual SpinSweep could have been damaged but upon unpacking, it appeared to be fine.ASSEMBLY: Putting it together was incredibly easy, just unpack, remove the plastic, and snap the handle bar together, attach it to the SpinSweep and you're finished! Took less than 5 minutes to unpack and get it assembled.INSPECTION: After putting it together I inspected it thoroughly, I noticed that it was a wheel that pivots in the rear, which I thought would result in it being more maneuverable as I had to pick up the older L1400 often in order to reposition it, so if this new L1405 feature gave met he ability to turn the Spinsweep easily I was all for it! The plastic seemed slightly thinner than the L1400 and it overall felt lighter. I took that to mean that it was just using more high-tech materials. I overall felt the quality of the materials was durable enough to sustain long-term repeated use.FIRST USE:So after I had it assembled, and gave it a good once over I took it out to my driveway, as I was so excited to try it out! Visions of it sweeping up every last spec of dirt danced through my mind as I grasped the handles and took aim, readying myself for the experience! I pushed and it jammed, I thought I had perhaps forgotten to remove something but after inspection there was nothing.I repositioned, pushed again and it started moving, but it was very hard to push, and it seemed only one of the brushes was moving, the other seemed to sporadically pulse. I stopped again, checked everything and it all seemed to be in order. I just went with it, walked up and down my driveway and it seemed to miss about 50% of the debris! I adjusted the height of the rear wheel with the dial and it still made no difference. The rear wheel that pivoted actually made it harder to control as the rear seemed to wobble everywhere making it less stable.I was thoroughly confused, thinking maybe I misremembered how my old trusty L1400 worked. So I dug it out of the shed, brought it out, sat them side-by-side and compared them, they looked pretty close in design. So I went ahead and tried the L1400 and it worked flawlessly, picking up 95% of the debris on the first pass. I WAS THOROUGHLY CONFUSED AS TO WHY THE OLD MODEL WORKED BETTER THAN THE NEW PROFESSIONAL VERSION! I gave up and decided to sleep on it.SECOND USE:I waited a few days and decided to try it again, this time on my rear deck, and ultimately it was the same problem. It was missing half the debris, the wheels were not reliably spinning the brushes, and debris would get jammed in the edges and cause the brushes to either get stuck or to just loose dirt. The bottom also seemed to be scraping on the ground more than it should, and I adjusted the dial to lift it some more, which in turn changes the angle of the brushes and made it even harder for them to turn. I was thoroughly confused. I went over a huge area with a lot of sand, and dirt and it seemed to pick up about half, but strewn about the other half! I just don't understand why it was not working! I again grabbed the old L1400 and it worked flawlessly! The designs seem so similar so I was confused as to why the new one would not work as well.THIRD THROUGH NINTH USES:Same issue, tried numerous configurations, surfaces, height adjusts, etc and still is not performing well.TENTH USE:I had tried it numerous times since, as I was frustrated with the lack of performance in the L1405, tried it again and still the same problems. I then decided to do a thorough inspection of it. When I flipped it over I noticed that the little rubber piece, which I usually had to replace in the L1400 every few years, had already torn on the L1405! I had used it ten (10) times and it had already worn through the rubber and was now falling off!I also noticed tons of scratches on the bottom of the spinsweep! I don't know if because it is a black plastic they just showed up easier, but my old green one, after a decade of use, was not that torn up! I compared the brushes and the L1405 seemed to have a thinner brush than the L1400 and the caster/wheels seemed to be less substantial and slightly more delicate.I also noticed what appeared to be a plastic seal that was flaking apart on one of the wheels, although it did not seem to affect the performance as the other wheel did not have that issue. The gears also seemed to not be making very good contact, not sure if it is a design issue or if the gears striped. Overall, I am unsure what exactly is causing the issue, but I can say after multiple uses that the newer L1405 does not perform as well as the much older L1400.FINAL ACTION:After using it for several weeks, and trying it probably a dozen times more, I am left with the feeling that there really is no way to "FIX" the spinsweep. I did speak with a repair center and the only real option they gave was for me to pay to ship the Spinsweep to the "Repair Center" and they would pay to ship it back. The repair guy also stated that if I knew what I needed that they could possibly ship me the parts and I would then have to try my hand at replacing them, but they could not give me a time window of when I might receive them. This was risky as I would then be outside of Amazon's 30-day return window. So with a Spinsweep that is not even a month old I would now be expected to either pay to have it shipped and repaired, drive long distances to drop it off and pick it up, or wait weeks for replacement parts (when I had no idea which parts I really needed!). Even then, there was no guarantee that the problem would be fixed!I am disheartened as I am a HUGE fan of the older L1400 spinsweep and have used it regularly over the years. I am so disappointed that Hoover has dropped the ball on the L1405, as this most likely signals the end of a product line. I did order the replacement rubber piece for my old L1400 and hope that will work until I find something.CONCLUSION:I have debated to either try a repair or to just send it back to Amazon. I really wanted to love the L1405 Spinsweep, given my history with the L1400. There is a VERY REAL POSSIBILITY that I just received a faulty unit. But I honestly do not feel it in my best interest to attempt to repair a product which may be plagued by a faulty design. Even if it did work like my L1400 after the repair, or optimistically better, how long would that last? How long before the problems I had out of the box would begin to creep back up and I am once again left with the stress, anxiety, and frustration of trying to get it working once more?Being a PRIME MEMBER, and a long time customer of Amazon, I have decided that the best course of action would probably be to send it back for a FULL REFUND. I am so grateful for Amazon being one of the few companies left out there that treats their customers well, and takes care of them. Their Hassel Free returns really has helped put me at ease in this situation. I only wished that more companies out there would understand that building long-term relationships via customer goodwill is something that is beneficial. So here is a shout-out to Amazon - THANKS FOR LOOKING OUT FOR THE CUSTOMER!!!!SUGGESTIONS:I highly suggest Hoover FIX THE L1405 OR RELEASE A REPLACEMENT! Hoover should also consider just quickly shipping customers a replacement SpinSweep, having them return the faulty one back to Hoover, at least that way the customers would be happy to have a new or refurbished Spinsweep that is guaranteed and tested to work, and Hoover can at their leisure repair the faulty one. This would be an improvement with customers not having to tolerate a long stressful ordeal. Amazon might be a good example for HOOVER to look to.As for others looking for a Spinsweep like option, I would say go and buy a used L1400 or look into other more expensive commercial options. The parts for the L1400 can still be bought from third party vendors, although it can be expensive, the little rubber part runs about $15 shipped and needs to replaced every year or two depending on use.ADDENDUM: I have uploaded several photos that detail the issues I have discussed. I have also compared the L1400 with the newer L1405 so you can get an idea of the differences.*** UPDATE 6/18/2015 ***I just wanted to say that I am still using the older L1400 Model without issue and I personally still recommend trying to get the L1400 instead of the newer one. Still no response from Hoover so I have essentially given up on them ever providing an answer to these issues.

Things you should know
I live on a heavily treed property. Our yard maintenance individuals have made it a practice to blow leaves into the ground cover. Over the years, these leaves have degraded and effectively raised the soil level to the point where sprinkler heads are lower into the ground and don't get high enough to properly water the ground cover. My solution was to maintain the solid surface areas of my property myself and pick up leaves for collection. I tried a broom but encountered two problems: It is difficult to use on the rough surfaces (brick pavers and pebbled driveway) and involves the repetitive action required for sweeping. I tried a blower/vac, but it is noisy, less precise at getting leaves where you want them, and produces a lot of dust. Additionally, it requires switching it from the blower function to the vacuum function if you want to pick up the pile you created. Using a blower vac as a vacuum only is tiresome because it only picks up a small diameter area.Enter the SpinSweep:In my limited experience, the SpinSweep works as well as a broom, but with far less effort. Some individuals state the SpinSweep leaves a trail down the middle and throws some debris to the sides. I have not experienced the trail unless the hopper gets too full, but I have noticed some debris can wind up on the sides. To me, this is not much different than a push broom because, on rough surfaces, it is necessary to push a broom over the same area repeatedly and with a choppy forceful motion which sometimes scatters debris. The main advantage to a push broom over the SpinSweep is you can sweep a greater area before you have to pick up what you are sweeping. With the SpinSweep, it begins to bog down once the hopper get full enough to resist the movement of the spinning brushes. It becomes a little more time consuming to have to empty the hopper before it is completely full, but it is still easier than a dust pan and broom.A blower offers the greatest speed at cleaning, but with far less precision. Furthermore, although the SpinSweep can get noisy, it is not nearly as noisy as a blower. Picking up blown debris with the vacuum creates significantly more dust than the SpinSweep, but it does have the advantage of shredding the material you are picking up. The SpinSweep will however pick up items the blower vac's vacuum won't such as heavy nuts from trees and even small rocks. In short here are the Pros and Cons and some recommendations regarding the SpinSweep:Pros:1. Easier than a broom.2. More precise than a blower-vac.3. Can pick up heavier items than a blower-vac's vacuum.4. Quieter than a blower-vac.Cons:1. Noisier than a broom.2. Not as precise as a broom.3. For the most effective cleaning, you must empty the hopper before it completely fills, this makes it functionally a very small hopper.4. Not as fast as a blower.Recommendations:1. I you buy this, keep in mind, it is best to empty the hopper as soon as it begins to bog down.2. I did not use the SpinSweep to pick up smaller debris such as grass clippings, but it did pick up crushed acorns, so I suspect it will do a good job. Some reviewers suggest the SpinSweep is inadequate for clearing heavier objects and should only be used for things like grass clippings. etc. I picked up piles of acorns, ball moss, and a couple of golf-ball sized rocks with no problem. Personally, I would use a blower for things like grass clippings because it's faster and I don't mind them being blown back onto the lawn or into the ground cover. The only reason I can see for using the SpinSweep for that purpose is to avoid the noise of a blower.3. Having used the SpinSweep, may main gripe is, for the area I am cleaning, it is not wide enough, nor does it have a big enough hopper. I would say, compared to a broom, the sweeping area is about the same as the maximum width broom you would want to use to comfortably sweep rough surfaces.I only used the SpinSweep for a little more than an hour so I cannot comment on it's longevity. I plan to keep it unless it breaks down within Amazon's return window.Addendum: In my original review I stated the SpinSweep is as precise as a broom, I have changed my review to reflect the following: If you want the greatest control and precision on where you want debris to end up, a broom is the most precise, the SpinSweep is second and a blower is a distant third.I recently used the SpinSweep to pickup oak tree pollen sacs and experienced one of the complaints others have voiced: The sweeper does indeed leave a trail in the center of the path. I had not noticed this problem because I had only used it previously to pick up leaves and larger objects are not left behind. You can minimize this effect by pushing the sweeper faster, but the faster you go, the more it causes dirt to fly out to the sides. In short, the SpinSweep is more useful for larger items and not the best for fine dirt.Recommendatons:1) For speed, thoroughness and ease of use, a blower is best, but it sacrifices precise control.2) For thoroughness and control, a broom is best, but it sacrifices ease of use.3) The SpinSweep represents a compromise. It's more precise than a blower, a little easier on the arms than a broom, and unlike a broom allows you actually pick up debris without requiring bending and sweeping into a dustpan. When I don't want to deal with the dust created by a blower, I like to alternate between a broom and the SpinSweep. Pushing the SpinSweep actually allows me to continue working while resting the muscles used for sweeping and visa versa.

Excellent!
This is a replacement of my existing one. My existing one was purchased 13+ years ago so it is well worth the price. It still works but of course it shows aging and doesn't perform as well as when it was young. So, I purchased a 2nd one. No where I can purchase at any retail store in Canada so Amazon.ca is my only solution. Thank you Amazon!
