Does this scan both sides of a document from the feed tray?  This was my biggest criticism of the 7860 DW.

Not only does the MFCL2740DW scan 2-sided documents via the automatic document feeder, it does so in one pass. There are two scanner sensors, one for each side of the page. While not a necessity for us, this is a great feature that speeds up scanning a bunch and limits the potential for jams.

What is the difference between this one and the much less expensive brother mfcl2700dw compact laser all-in one printer with wireless networking?

There aren't a lot of differences, in most aspects they are close to the same printer, but there are a couple of differences.  Here is what that extra $60 gets you.  The MFCL2740DW is a faster printer, so it will print approx. 30 pages per minute compared to 26 on the 2700.  The screen and method of input is also different.  The 2740 has a 2.7 in. touch screen and you do most of your work from that screen, the 2700 has a 2 line black and white screen, and a whole compliment of buttons to use to operate the printer.  That goes down to personal preference.  I prefer the touchscreen.  I feel like its much easier to operate, so I feel that the 2740 has a much better user interface because of the touchscreen. The last major difference is that the 2740 can print, copy, scan, and fax two sided documents from the document feeder, but the 2700 can only print.  For me this is a huge advantage, because I do everything from the document feeder, and only open the tray when I'm scanning from a book or something like that.  I hope this helps.  I've had the MFCL2740DW for over a year now.  I don't use the brother's brand toner cartridges, I use the EPS TN660 cartridges ($13.97 on Amazon), and I just always keep an extra one on hand.  I love it, it works well on everything I have, and I've never had any problems with the printer.  After your initial investment it is very cheap to run (I believe that paper is now my biggest expense).  For me the deciding factors were having all of the Duplex capabilities, and the addition of the touchscreen over the multitude of buttons and tiny display.  Hope that helps.
