Can this be used in the qda-a2ar (which holds two 2.5-inch sata drives in a single 3.5-inch sata drive bay)? basically, 4 m.2 ssds in one 3.5" bay?

You shouldn't have any problem space-wise. The only challenge would be mounting holes. I'm sure you could find a bracket made for this purpose online. Otherwise, spacers of some sort should do the trick. Great case design for heat disapation. PS4 will not recognize however. I have two if these in a RAID-0 configuration using my embedded motherboard controller and it works splendidly.

Is this adapter available to get Trim and Smart commands and the like through to the m.2 drives? Most of these don't and those are very necessary

I think it is but you can always try it and send it back if it doesn't.

Would it be possible to connect this to a phone? either another enclosure like an orico to type-c or even a weme sata cord with a powered port?

I think it should. I put it in once in a toaster style 2.5"/3.5" USB 3 adapter and connected to my mini pc also I tested in my NAS drive. Both worked. Very well built I put it two 1TB M.2 SSD but you can put in two 2TB M.2 SSD or maybe even higher. It's not easy to change the built in raid controller settings. It's easy to change it with the provided pin but you have to go through some connect and disconnect sequence.
