One of the best movies ever made...
I saw this movie in the theater when it first came out when I was in college. I walked a mile to the theater (1 screen, no cineplex...) on a Thursday night without having any idea what was playing. I'd never even heard of this but as I'd made the trek, I bought a ticket. Immediately I fell in love with the movie and Deborah Foreman. (After seeing this movie I went out and picked up dozens of copies of our free college magazine with ads she did for Maybelline cosmetics and covered my dorm room wall with them.) I was so enchanted with it and her that I walked back the next night, but to my horror it turns out they change movies on Friday! Who knew? It was gone. I probably had to wait 10 years before I was able to see it again!!!And the soundtrack (Modern English, Plimsouls, Josie Cotton, etc.) is nothing short of spectacular - although a couple of songs wouldn't make it through the woke gauntlet today. For some reason they didn't release the soundtrack for, I don't know, maybe 20 years. As a result, my first purchase of the soundtrack was a pirated tape from a head shop / record store in Little Five Points in Atlanta. I eventually got the CD and the DVD, but they were long in coming.Basically it's Romeo & Juliet set in LA in the 80's. It's everything you would want and more, although my wife still thinks I'm nuts for liking it. I was saddened to read recently that Nicolas Cage, (It was his first starring role) when asked about his favorite works, didn't include this gem among his top 5. Indeed, he didn't even mention it. He had to have been probably suffering the effects of Ambien or something because there can be no other explanation for this not being at the very top of his list.

Wow, does not hold up well
Of course 80s nostalgia. If that's your deal, then go for it. And although he doesn't go full Nic Cage, we do get a small glimpse of what Cage can do with the right director. Finally, some high points on the soundtrack, in particular Eddy Grant's "Electric Avenue."That said, this one doesn't hold up very well... the main message of "don't let your friends tell you what to do" works okay, but basically after Julie breaks up with him, Cage stalks her and then physically attacks her boyfriend at her prom. My hero!! Yeah, no, not okay. And he does that right after Josie Cotton sings her queer baiting anthem, "Johnny Are You Queer?" There's different ways to interpret this song, but one of them is that she is calling Johnny "queer" because he isn't interested in her. Nice. So right after a song about a girl challenging a guy's masculinity with homophobia, we get Cage attacking his would-be girlfriend's boyfriend on stage. Nice.No PoC appear anywhere in this film, except for one Black girl, who Tommy dances with to upset Julie. Hmm, why would her ex-boyfriend dancing with a Black girl upset Julie? Finally, fwiw, what is Nic Cage supposed to be in this movie? A punk? Yeah, I don't think so. I'm going to go listen to some of my Oi Polloi records now...

Like the 80's movies are like totally the best!!
Wanna know what it was like? Watch this movie. The sound track takes you back in time and the wardrobe is right on point. Look at the locations, some that no longer exist. What a marvelous time existed when we all got along and dressed up instead of down. People cared about their appearance and regardless of race we all hung out together and danced to all genres of music. Music was creative and original to say the least. Not what you are forced to listen to these days on the radio. Great story and lots of nostalgia. See it, share it, and keep showing it to younger generations. Maybe they will learn something.

Valley Girl and 16 Candles encapsulated the eighties more than any other movies...
...and yes, we dressed and talked like that back then... "like totally bitchin' & for real". This was also the movie that first put Nicolas Cage on the map... not even listed as a star of the movie, he was listed as a "supporting actor".

Peak 80s
As a Tommy, I felt personally attacked by this movie. Also I loved it anyways, it's so 80s, and you can definitely see why the valley girl impersonation exploded in popularity after this movie's release! Just try to count all the "God!", "Totally!" and "Like!" that you hear throughout the film. The movie even acknowledges and makes fun of it at one point haha. Overall I had a lot of fun watching this, it's a classic romance / coming-of-age that anyone can relate to even all these years later.

Nicolas Cage in a 80s flick
If I remember correctly, this is one of Nicolas Cage's first movies. A fave of mine. I love anything 80s, and this is for sure the ultimate 80s movies. It shows teenagers of today how parties, social events, music - all came into play. No social media, no cell phones. Just kids having fun. In the midst of kids having fun, there is a mixture of teenage angst, and romance. A must- see for any Nicolas Cage, or Deborah Foreman fan.
