I bought this to help me understand Vassily Grossman's novels but it reads as easily as a novel even though it is closer to a textbook.

This is an incredible account. The level of detail is fascinating. I’m not sure there is much here to inspire; It’s a brutal fight between two despots where truth and life often have little value.

I can't really understand the fuss about Beevor. Certainly, the topic is fascinating and he marshals the facts well enough, but his writing style is not always very coherent as he doesn't employ basic conjunctions or sentence adverbials in a consistent manner, so sometimes the relation between events is not quite clear. Added to that, the text seemed clogged with the names of armies and generals at times and the narrative lacked the flow that you would expect from a really first-rate history.
