Jazz Guitar Single Note Soloing, Volume 1

Thorough and useful, if applied immediately
As a teacher, Ted Greene favors a very thorough approach. While this is good, it can also be very overwhelming. In fact, at first I had a very difficult time retaining information from this book, but it is now one of the most useful books I have. This shift required a change in approach on my part. I am going to detail precisely how I got this book to work for me.This book essentially acquaints the reader with four different sounds: major, minor, dominant and altered dominant. It gives a set of ideas or licks for each sound, in each position. While this is a reasonable structure, it is nearly impossible to remember long strings of isolated licks. So my advice to you is this: use these sounds on real tunes as you learn them (basic jazz standards are a great place to try these licks). That way, the sounds you like will stick with you much better, and you can hear how they sound over the chords. If you are new to jazz, you can try to systematically open up the whole fretboard to your fingers and ears, by playing through this book front to back. If you have been playing for a while, this book also serves as an excellent reference guide. For example, let's say that you are rehearsing a tune and you feel limited over a certain change. Just open this book to the corresponding scale and position, and a wealth of ideas are there to help you get out of your creative rut.Helpfully structured, thorough and practical. It does require a good deal of patience and dedication, but if you are serious about this art form, you already have those qualities. Highly recommended.

Essential, insightful, and exciting stuff
This book and all of Ted Greene's books will require you to apply a disciplined effort in working through the material. They are organized in a way to be beneficial to a broad range of skill levels. In truth though a solid understanding of basic harmony and chord/scale relationships will go a long way in allowing you to access the concepts more enjoyably. Understanding all of the information presented is hard work. Attempting to master it so that you can use it spontaneously may take a lifetime. However whatever effort you put into this training will yield invaluable benefits and absolutely make you a significantly better guitarist and musician. My only regret is that I did not know about this material and Mr. Greene sooner.

SKIP IT
I was disappointed with this book. It might have some value for a total novice but not someone more advanced. Unless you're trying to analyze a particular player's style I think it's time to abandon tabulature. That's a large part of developing as a guitarist, to become familiar with the fretboard, understand the various alternative fingerings and choose the right one. Most of the chords shown are awkward and don't sound that good either. It's better for a developing guitarist to understand the rules of chord construction and then discover your own. That's how you learn the fretboard. Just memorizing things that you can't really use is a boring waste of time. Better to concentrate on playing a lot of songs and concentrate on the musicality of your improvisation.

THE single note soloing book.
I know the name suggests that it's about single note soloing, and hey...it is! This book is fantastic. All of Ted Greene's books are just great at explaining so many of the common things in Jazz guitar playing. Very clear, very unique, great way of displaying all of the information. The problem with this book is, it's all in staff, so if you only read tab, I'd advise against this!

In sintesi: c'è scritto tutto. Comunque... Quattro libretti da cento pagine l'uno... Il sacro graal. Bisogna lavorarci molto senza scoraggiarsi... Da avere assolutamente (acquistati tutti e quattro)!
