And our new switching power supply allows for easy-integration into applications and environments that find themselves outside the realm of 110V AC power. Not only can audio be captured to an SD/SDHC card up to 24-bit/96kHz, but the front-panel mounted USB port allows for the acquisition of audio as well. And the two record mediums can be used simultaneously with the new Dual Record feature, ideal for conferences that need to have the audio immediately or in applications where proper capture must be ensured. Additionally, the Relay Record feature can extend record times by switching to the other media when the primary memory is full. A front panel USB keyboard port allows for naming of files while a recording is happening and control. Full control can also be achieved by the on-board RS-232c serial connection for integrated systems by AMX or Crestron and the GPIO port allows instant triggerable access to many features, including the DN-500R’s 20 assignable hot start playback files. Recordings can be edited directly on the device or marked with EDLs for later review. When imported to the included DMP Mark Editor Software (Windows only), those marks come with the file, ensuring instant access to points of interest. And not only is the DN-500R the perfect standalone audio recorder, but it is a rock-solid audio playback device making it an affordable and appropriate solution for just about any audio installation.

Great solid state recorder
The Denon DN-500R is a very good solid state recorder with professional level functions and just a few minor limitations.It is possible to record in stereo up to the 96 kHz/24 bit quality level, The balanced XLR input both for analog and digital S/PDIF ensure the best quality of recordings, but there are also unbalanced input (coax only) to connect all kinds of equipment. Quality of recordings is as good as the original source and the selection of 16 or 24 bit allows you to create either a master ideal for subsequent editing, or files ready for final use. The choice of sampling rates is limited to 44.1, 48 and 96 kHz, it would have been good to have also 88.2 kHz for maximum compatibility with 44.1 kHz final destinations.You can record to SD/SDHC and USB. It is possible to record simultaneously to both destinations an identical copy for backup. It is also possible to use the two destinations in relay (e.g. to continue to the other media when the first is full).After the recording it is possible to combine, divide and cut the recording, although it takes a while to wait for the new file to be created (actually in case of split or combine it creates new files with the result of the operation). It is also possible to move files between folders and media, assign names and delete unnecessary recordings. By using an external keyboard renaming files is much easier than using the Menu function and the 500R is compatible with standard USB keyboards. The Menu itself is not extremely user friendly but after a while you get used to it and then the use is almost straightforward.On the minus I would mention that SD card slot cannot read cards with capacity above 32 GB and is not compatible with SDXC, but any size is usable on the USB slot for USB pen drives or external HDD. There is no digital optical input/output and no IR remote, although it is possible to connect serial controllers. The 500R can read WAV, MP4, AAC, AIF files and can record in WAV and MP3. There is no compatibility (read nor write) with FLAC.
