Practical English Usage, 4th edition: International Edition (without online access): Michael Swan's guide to problems in English

この本に関しては様々な書評がされているので省きます。多くの方はペーパーバック版を購入されていますが、ハードカバー版はあまり出回っていません。値段的にこのaccess key付の二種類の価格差はそんなに差がないのでこちらの版もお勧めです。

英語で書かれた英語の文法書。ある程度英語が分かるようになったら、英語は英語で学ぶのが1番です。内容はすごくわかり易くて面白いです。

一部では神格化されているようですが、内容は意外と大したことないです。読んでみると日本の文法書や総合英語とそんなに変わらない事に気づくと思います。 日本の市場は競争が激しいので、有用な記述はすぐに日本の書籍に取り込まれてしまうということでしょう。 英語教師は持っていてほしいですが、一般学習者が持つメリットはそこまでないかもしれません。 悪い本でもないし格段良い本でもないので星4つです。

This book provides insights into English grammar in a well-structured and detailed manner. It is helpful to those who want to master English grammar or those who want to pursue a career in English-teaching.

物足りないかな

体系的な知識の習得には文脈のある整理が有効と考える私にとって 4th Edtion の（内容における） 変更点は願ってもない改良。喜び勇んでハードバック版を購入しました（買い足しました）。 ところが 3rd Edition までのハードバック版が布製のいかにも頑丈な作りであったのに対し、 4th Edition のハードバックは厚紙製に変更され、なおかつ本編の紙質もいくぶん頼りないものに 変更になっています。 コストダウンの要求を請けたものでしょうが、一生ものの教科書として購入する向きが多いであろう 本名作において非常に残念な仕様変更であると考えます。

Das Buch war nötig für mein Studium, und hat mich äußerst positiv überrascht. Michael Swan nimmt sich hier diverser Problemfelder des Englischen an, und erklärt auf einfachste Weise selbst die schwierigsten Regeln (und Nicht-Regeln) aus allen möglichen Bereichen, und das ganz ohne unnötiges Fachchinesisch. Hier wird immer klar, dass das Ziel wirklich die Anwendung in der Praxis ist. Noch dazu ist das Buch wunderbar logisch aufgebaut, und funktioniert prima als Nachschlagewerk, speziell wenn mal mal nicht weiß, warum eine Regel so ist, wie sie ist. Eine Art Wörterbuch für sprachliche Regeln, sozusagen. Jedem Anglistikstudierenden würde ich das Buch wärmstens empfehlen, selbst wenn die jeweilige Universität das Buch nicht vorschreibt. Aber auch jedem Pädagogen, Nachhilfelehrer, oder Menschen der sonstwie im Alltag mit Englisch zu tun hat, würde ich stets zu "Practical English Usage" raten.

È facile capire perché: copre tutti gli argomenti della grammatica inglese, con capitoli sintetici ma esaustivi, fornendo ottimi esempi di frasi che aiutano a comprendere il tema. A mio avviso è un libro da consultazione, da avere a portata di mano quando si hanno dubbi. Per questo è particolarmente indicato per chi ha già una sufficiente conoscenza dell'inglese e lo usa magari in contesti lavorativi o perché magari cura degli scritti in inglese o perché si trova in situazioni in cui è necessario esprimersi frequentemente in tale lingua. NON è un libro per chi deve iniziare da zero e cerca magari una grammatica strutturata che parta dalle basi per poi progredire gradualmente. Feedback positivo anche per il venditore Galleriadellibro da cui l'ho preso usato a meno della metà del prezzo nuovo, in buonissime condizioni.

The British Council recommended this book (along with a few others) as a helpful resource for the CELTA course, so I purchased it and one other textbook. And honestly, this book is so much better! It surpassed my expectations. It is compact, yet helpful and full of useful information that otherwise would have been a pain to Google search for. There’s a helpful index at the back of the book, which I am making extensive use of for my pre-course task. Not to mention, the language is clear and concise. This is exactly what I needed. With all of that said, this is more of a reference for learning new information. This is NOT the book for you if all you’re looking for is some practice exercises, there aren’t any in this book.
