Very simple and direct form of study.
It’s not watered down with detail. Sometimes detail helps, but more times than not, too much detail confuses you. Things start to make sense with the easy examples, and you start to understand the details without the explanations.

Provides the best parts of "Tae Kim Guide to Japanese Grammar" and "Core 2k/6k Vocabulary".
I became aware of this book from a Matt VS Japan video where he discussed a person's success story of studying just this book and the follow-on N4 book, and ending up passing the JLPT N4 exam with no other study. While interesting, the biggest selling point was mentioning that all 1000 words in this book have example sentences that progressively introduce more complex Japanese grammar PLUS the book publisher's website provide native audio of all the words and sentences.I have purchased this book and proceeded to convert into an Anki electronic flashcard format along with the audio. In the process, I concur this is a great resource that provides what Tae Kim and Core 2k does without their weaknesses. Unlike Core 2k, the example sentences do not use grammar or vocabulary not already introduced. Unlike Tae Kim, there's no sentence with 3 or more new words introduced and each new grammar concept has multiple sentences demonstrating it. By the way, grammar is taught through the context of the sentences which means you learn it intuitively as you learn vocabulary. My recommendation for anyone using this book to ask persons who have the Anki deck for it share (with modest proof of ownership of the book). Then, set up your cards to test Audio to Comprehension. In addition, use the merged audio files of the sentences to add in your Japanese audio immersion loop if you do such techniques to increase your listening fluency.

The content is very good and well planned.
I like the book. The paper is nice and the colour printing and pictures are fine. I also like the way it builds up the vocabulary for a complete beginner. It is sometimes confusing to have both English and Vietnamese translations together. Although economical, separate volumes would be clearer. I also find the very, very tiny hiragana font used under Kanji difficult to read...in particular when it's red, when the diacritics/dauten are almost impossible to see.

Frustrating to use: Japanese is in hard-to-read pink letters, font is small, Vietnamese distracting.
I bought this book because it was recommended by a Japanese learning website, but it's the most frustrating guide I have used thus far. First, all of the Japanese is in pink lettering which makes it super difficult to read (yes, this is because it has the red "decoder" card gimmick). Additionally the fonts are really small -- the smallest of any Japanese language learning book I've seen, and I've looked at a dozen or more in the bookstore. The kanji itself is too small, but the furigana is practically unreadable... it's about 1mm tall! (I'm not exaggerating) Lastly, it includes Vietnamese. WTH? So the book wastes space by including Vietnamese, and then makes the font small so that everything fits but is impossible to read? This is such a bizarre choice. There should be a Japanese-English only version with bigger fonts. This book is so difficult to read unless I'm in bright office lights or outside in the sun... forget trying to study using the light from a bedside lamp before you go to sleep at night.
