Picture is not of the brush I received
The photo that accompanies the listing is a wider brush. Also, one of my painting class colleagues had a 1 1/2" hake brush that was clearly much wider than the one I received. Mine is stamped "1 1/2" on the side, so it's not that I was sent the wrong item, simply that this brand doesn't seem to be able to measure 1 1/2" as generously as other brands. The brush works just fine and is the quality I was looking for, it's just smaller than I really wanted.

Perfect for applying shellac
The bristles were just a tad long so I trimmed them. I use this brush for applying shellac to any size furniture. I mostly restore vintage sewing machines and cabinets, so this brush is the key to proper application of the OEM finish. I once struggled with applying shellac until I found a YouTube video by Paul Sellers who shows how to do it the right way. This brush is it.

Works good...
This is a great watercolor brush. It is sturdy and makes good strokes. I like it. But it smells funky. Very strong odor to it, not funky-stinky, just funky-strange. Kind of like mothballs. A bit bothersome, but I hope the smell will go away.

Not holding much water
Using for wetting watercolor paper. Can't seem to load enough water in the bristles to really wet my paper.

Good for Encaustics
Nicely made hake brush that doesn't shed. I have purchased other hake brushes and had issues with the brush hairs shedding all over my wax. Not so with this brush. I wish it were larger, but it is well made and cleans up nicely with soy wax. I will buy more of these.

Maybe I'm missing something
This style of brush was specified by the instructor of a watercolor class I am taking. When I bought it, before the first day of class, I didn't realize what it would be used for. Turns out we use it to wet the paper before applying paint for washes. This brush sheds all over the place. And worse, I could have spent $3 on a basic hardware store brush and gotten better results.
