Describe the filler? Is it solid foam? Is it shredded foam? Does it lump up or retain its shape? How thick is it?

It's an odd filler. It's a green fabric filler that is neither solid or shredded foam. So far it has retained it's shape. It's about 8-10 inches tall. The filler is inside of a zipped casing that is then inside of the outer casing so it's all restuffable if need be. Really high quality for a pet product.

What size dog does an x-large accommodate? specifically i'm wondering if a 70 pound dog would fit.

My dog is 84 lbs and he fits and has extra room. So your 70 lb dog will fit perfectly also.

I have a minature long haired dachshund that weighs about 20-22 lbs. Will he fit in this bed at a small size, 25' x 25'?

It may work. My dachshund weighs 12 lbs and there is a bit more room once he gets in. He slides off to the side, however and doesn't seem very comfortable. I'm not 100% pleased with the liner - it's synthetic, and not very soft or warm.He will stay in for a while, then gets out and paces around like he's not comfortable.My dog much prefers the multi-folded comforter we were using before to this, so I just put it back out for him. :) I wanted something that looked neater than the folded comforter, but what do you do?
