Everyone should read this
I agree with the other reviewers who have given this book 5 stars. It's a brilliantly written eye opener. The more I learn about animals the more I respect them - and the more I dislike humans who exploit and abuse animals, encroach on their habitat and ruin the entire planet, not just for other species but for themselves - for PROFIT. I can only hope that as more people realise that animals have emotions, individuality and yes, culture, attitudes will change before it's too late.

Wonderful
A beautifully written book on a fascinating subject. Humourous and heart-breaking in equal measure, I genuinely believe that this is one of the best books that I have ever read. It draws attention to the almost wilful misunderstanding of the complexity of animal communication by humans. I was riveted from the start and I cannot recommend this book enough. Carl Safina has that rare quality in a scientific writer: the ability to tell a spellbinding tale. Beyond Words is a book that feels like a discovered treasure. An absolute must for anybody who has an interest in animals. I bought it as a gift for someone else, but after reading the first few pages I got them a box of chocolates and kept it for myself. Get it, you won't regret it.

love, laugh
I haven't even read this yet, but being an animal lover and vegetarian (almost vegan) for over 25 years, and having a deep seated belief in the rights of animals to live as God designed them, to live, love, laugh, play and fight in their own unique way, and having watch Carl's fabulous TED Talk, and finally checking out some of the reviews on here, I know already that I am going to give this book 5 stars and I'm going to love it! I'll revisit this review when I've finished it!

Best book I read in 2016
The best book I read last year, out of 30 plus. It really makes you think again about humans and our role among other animals - we are not so different after all. This book inspired me to read a number of other books on animal psychology and behaviour, all fascinating. Beyond Words, though, is certainly the best place to start and gives a truely excellent appreciation of the rapidly developing field of animal behaviour and is written superbly.

Beyond Words: What Animals Think and Feel
One of the best books I've read. I love animals and nature. This book echoes a lot of what I already feel, has taught me so much more, and has reaffirmed what an amazing planet we live on. I wish all of the human race could see animals in the same way as Carl Safina. I'm sure we'd live in a healthier and happier world. I have just discovered my new favourite author. Thank you for writing this.

Small print and very wordy. Not my kind of book.
Large book I found a bit difficult to get into. Not complaining, but for me a bit disappointing. Unable to finish reading as it sends me to sleep.

Transformed how I view the world
I am 50 and have read a lot of books during my life. None has had such a transformational impact on the way I view the world as this one. I cannot recommend it strongly enough. It is easy to read, packs a wealth of scientific information, encourages you to see the world from a different perspective but ultimately leaves you to drawer your own conclusions.
