An Pour Over To The Extreme
The asobu {sic] insulated Pour Over Coffee Maker 32 oz Double-Wall Stainless Steel Filter and Take-on-the-Go Carafe is one heck of a great and great looking pour-over coffee maker. Although it comes in four colors—stainless steel (silver), burgundy, matte black and copper and now a fifth in asobu wood, I preferred the silver. I thought I was getting too much matte black in our kitchen.Compared to other pour-over coffee makers, this one is very large—32 ozs. If you make coffee per asobu’s instructions it takes 66 gms of coffee and 1000 gms. of filtered water. I have a 1L gooseneck kettle which is larger than most kettles of this type so I had to cut down the amounts. The double-wall stainless steel filter works like a charm. I have used metal filters before usually as a flat or cone basket filter with ‘muddy’ results. However, this filter is extremely good. There was very little ‘mud’ in the bottom of the carafe which to me was a godsend. I do have bit of a pick with the stainless steel carafe. It is quite large; to wit, it’s very somewhat difficult to handle with just one hand. In fact, it’s impossible to do so unless you have a hand with fingers that will stretch to an 8 or more. An 8 equals the number of white keys on a pianoforte that one can reach—a full octave. Most women cannot stretch their fingers that far and as a result would have a hard time gripping the carafe by the bottom with four fingers and a thumb completely wrapped around the side. Thus, pouring from the carafe take two hands to prevent spillage.Another plus for this pour over is that it makes fantastic coffee. This is my first adventure into pour over coffee. I have used French presses, a vacuum pot (electric, not stovetop), several drip coffee makers like the one I am currently using, the Cup One by Moccamaster which produces really fantastic coffee. However, using the same Sumatra Gayo beans with the Cup One as I did with this asobu pour over I tasted a completely different coffee or had I been blindfolded I would have thought I was drinking coffee from a completely different coffee bean. The taste, flavor, texture and body of the coffee was so vastly different I could not believe that I was drinking the same coffee. It was so different but so very pleasing and good.Of course the definitive benefit of this asobu pour over compared to a Chemex, for example, is the double-wall stainless steel carafe. In my second run, the coffee stayed hot for four hours with a loss of only three degrees and that’s with removing the top to pour a new cup of coffee three times. The carafe really does a great job keeping the temperature of the coffee at a slow rate of decline. The end result is a pour over system that is aesthetically beautiful, one that holds 32 ounces of coffee and keeps it hot for at least four hours losing only three degrees Fahrenheit (3° F), beautifully packaged, and all for a very reasonable price. The adage, ‘You get what you pay for’ certainly applies here.I can easily highly recommend the asobu pour over coffee system.

Unique Design
This arrived incredibly and sturdily packaged in a large cardboard tube. Packaging was just as unique as the entire design of this coffee maker. I chose this because it avoids plastic coming in contact with my coffee and it is a thermal container which keeps the coffee piping hot for hours. This is why I prefer this coffee maker over my glass Chemex which loses heat rapidly. This has a glass funnel top which screws onto the base. Into that goes a stainless steel basket filter where you place the coffee grounds. It also has a silicone ring where you hold it when pouring coffee into your cup. This ring prevents you from buring your hands. After you have made and poured your cup of coffee, you may remove the glass funnel and stainless ring and then you can seal the carafe with a stainless cap that will keep the coffee very hot for hours. The reason I have downgraded this beauty by one star is because the carafe is difficult to hold when you want to remove the cap to pour additional coffee. I think an engineering design to improve this would be the addition of a handle on the carafe base. This would provide an easier way to grip to remove the cap as well as to pour. This truly is unique and beautifully crafted and packaged.

Nice Coffee Maker
This is a great way to make coffee. It’s very easy to use. The filtration is very good which allows for a great tasting flavor. It doesn’t spill over and is very easy to clean up afterwards.

Fits my use case with some minor quibbles
UPDATE: I've downgraded my review to 1 star. The seal between the glass funnel and the thermal container has gotten worse over time. It has started to leak no matter how hard you turn the funnel. I've resorted to putting the glass funnel on top of a large Yeti insulated water bottle. I suspect a softer rubber seal would work better. At this point, I would just recommend getting a Hario V60 and putting it on top of some sort of insulated container.Original review: Overall, I would recommend this product for use cases similar to mine. My office is in the basement and it was always a colossal pain in the butt to go upstairs to make multiple cups of coffee (I drink decaf). I was looking for an insulated pourover system and this came up as the most relevant result. I've outlined what works well for me and some issues I've had:What I like:- A physically attractive product; none of the materials look or feel cheap- Makes pourover coffee as expected- Keeps my coffee hot for the time I need it to be hot (4 hrs)What I don't like:- The cap for the insulated carafe doesn't seem to be very insulated and gets pretty hot; this isn't a huge issue because it still keeps my coffee warm enough in the time period that I drink my coffee in (over the course of 4 hrs)- The "heat resistant" black plastic grip gets extremely hot so I really do question the "heat resistant" claim; this is easily solved by just gripping the grip with a kitchen towel- This is probably the biggest issue I have with the Asobu: the seals don't seem to fully seal so coffee ends up leaking through the black plastic grip and down the side of the carafe; I've managed to minimize the leakage by screwing on the glass piece and black plastic grip very hard but that's dangerous in of itself, especially with the glass pieceOverall, I'd still recommend it for my use case. Happy brewing!
