In A Modern Guide to Knifemaking, survivalist Laura Zerra, one of the stars of Naked and Afraid on the Discovery Channel, shares her essential knifemaking tips and tricks, including step-by-step instructions for both forging and stock removal. We all use a knife pretty much every day, but for Zerra, her daily life often depends on the blade she takes with her into the wild. She's learned about what works and what doesn't, what steel will hold an edge, and what nuances in blade design will make or break a knife. From design to sharpening, A Modern Guide to Knifemaking covers every step in the knifemaking process . To begin, you will consider what you want your knife to accomplish, develop a design , and make a prototype . Zerra takes you through choosing and buying steel for your knife and then teaches you to build your own forge . You will learn forging basics and then move on to forge the shape of your knife and make the blade tip. From there, you will cut the blade profile, grind in bevels to make the edge of the knife, heat treat and temper your blade , grind and polish it, and make a handle and sheath for it. You will also learn sharpening techniques to maintain the edge of your new knife. Throughout, Zerra has included Pro-Tips from some of the leading knifemakers working today including Ken Onion, Kaila Cumings, and Mike Jones. A Modern Guide to Knifemaking covers every detail of knifemaking so you can make yourself the perfect knife. Solid Book
I just got into knifemaking in the Fall of 22. This was one of a handful of books I purchased on knifemaking and has been a go-to resource for me so far. It has step by step details for each process along with an ample amount of photos to reference from. While there are alot of other books available on the market on the topic, for the price point, quality, and material presented, this book is a good purchase.

Best knifemaking book I've found!
Well written. Clear, concise, great illustrations. She really knows what stalking about and more importantly, she can pass it on. I just wish she had other books I could get.

Excellent introduction to knife making
If you are looking for a book that has everything about making knives you should look elsewhere. If, however, you want a clear guide to making your first knife, this is the book you want. Laura gives you a little setup info including the kinds of tools you need and then goes through each step in making a knife from initial design all the way to making the sheath.

Great book for all the steps in knife making
I'm new to knife making and this book is exactly what I needed. I love the step by step instructions, great photos, and the author's no-nonsense approach. I highly recommend it if you want all the steps for knife making in one well put-together book. You can always read and learn more about knife making, but this book gives you everything you need to make a knife from raw steel to sheath.

Great book
Read this cover to cover in two sittings. Really informative for someone starting out. Simply takes you through the process of your first knife. Detailed with great pictures. Particularly found the heat treating section useful. Would definitely recommend this book for someone starting out or thinking about the process.

Engaging writing and well produced but little detail.
This is a beautifully produced book and the author writes well. She covers all of the aspects of knifemaking and communicates her passion for it. Unfortunately there is very little detail so the book is best suited to the absolute beginner who is trying to gauge their enthusiasm for starting at knife making. Wayne Goddard’s 50 Dollar Knife Shop covers the same material in much more detail. For stock removal knife making try David Boye’s Step-by-Step Knife Making. Bladesmithing with Murray Carter covers Japanese forged knives and his book 101 Knife Designs is very useful too. For sheer inspiration from the work of a Master look at The Complete Bladesmith by Jim Hrisoulas.
