Cables, Cables, Cables! Cables have gotten a lot more sophisticated over the years. It’s no longer just wires connecting two ends. Many modern cables include internal circuitry, chips, and e-markers that tell your devices what they can handle in terms of charging and data transfer. This little tester removes the uncertainty of trusting cable descriptions. It works with USB-C, Micro-B, and Mini-B cables, and can check continuity, data capability, and resistance. It also reads USB-C e-markers to show power delivery and data transfer capabilities, which is very helpful when sorting through a drawer full of mixed cables. I use another simple tester for that. This one is for verifying specs and quality, and it does that job perfectly (see pictures). If you have lots of cables and want to know exactly which ones are high-quality or support fast charging, this is an excellent tool to have on your bench or desk.

Here’s your updated version with that additional technical detail included smoothly: *** I have a ton of USB cables but could never tell which ones were power-only, USB 2.0, or high-speed USB 3.2—the kind needed for SSDs and faster data transfers. Since it’s almost impossible to tell just by looking, I bought the TreeDeX USB Tester. It’s a compact little device, about 2 inches by 2 inches. I used it for the first time today because I had a cable and drive that weren’t being recognized, and I needed to figure out what kind of cable I was dealing with. I do have the manual somewhere, but like most guys, I didn’t bother reading it. The tester has ports on the right side for both USB-C and standard USB, and additional slots on the bottom for older connectors—from the old Mini USB to USB-C. On the left side, there’s a USB-C charging port, an on/off switch, and the main button that runs the tests. You connect your cable to one of the ports on the right and the end to one of the bottom ports. Turn on the tester, then you just press the test button and it automatically moves through each of the four test reports. These reports show various details about the cable’s connections and performance. Some of the data was a bit technical, but the key information—the cable type and data speed—was easy to find. It identified my cable as a passive USB 2.0 type and the speed of transmission. Overall, the TreeDeX USB Tester worked exactly as I hoped and provided clear, accurate results. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to identify and organize their cables confidently. It also has rechargeable battery, so no batteries are required.

This works very well for everything but the Lightning port. Pushing most Lightning cables all the way into the port will cause it to show that nearly every single cable doesn't supply power but they all do. If you instead just barely push the connector into the port, it will display both 2.0 and power delivery. I don't use Lightning much anymore so this isn't a big deal. Secondly, the battery life is not great. One AA doesn't support hours of use, its more like 30-40 minutes. Plenty in most cases, but I feel like a different battery method would have been more ideal. Other than that, this works great and told me everything I needed to know about the cables I have. I was able to cut down 2/3 of my cables and man.. USB C can mean a lot of things, so get one of these and find out whats what!

This is a handy little tester that helps you determine the properties of a cable, which often aren't obvious just by looking at the cable. It's very easy to use and although the display is fairly small, it is easy to read because the information is presented in an organized fashion. This tester supports cables with USB A or USSB C on one end, and either USB C, Micro USB, Mini USB, or Micro USB "3.0". Unfortunately it does not support USB B ("printer style") connections or USB B 3.0 style cables. Since those connectors are larger, I believe it would require the tester to be thicker. Additionally, this tester does not support lightning cables. There are 4 "screens" of information which you cycle through by pressing a (very) small button. The first screen is an overshowing if the cable can transmit data and power, and which type(s). The second screen shows the actual wire connections and their status. The third screen shows the cable resistance and can estimate the cable length, and the 4th screen will show the details of an active chip if there is one in the cable. Every computer technician or enthusiast should have one of these in their bag! With PD 3.1 Support! Good bang for the buck. Only downside is that it is not firmware upgradable.

Battery mode does not work, I may have gotten a bad apple, just be sure to test yours when you first get it.
